Hendrie Stakes & Ontario Colleen Stakes Odds

The summer Stakes races at Woodbine continue to come thick and fast with two Grade 3 races headlining this Saturday’s card. In the Hendrie Stakes, Canada’s 2022 Sprinter of the Year, Hazelbrook will bid to defend the crown she won last year.

The Ontario Colleen Stakes looks to be an incredibly competitive race with several former graded winners locking horns. 2023 Soaring Softly Stakes winner Queen Picasso is bound to be popular as will be 2022 Natalma Stakes winner Last Call.

Hendrie Stakes

Grade 3, 6 and a half furlongs, Dirt, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $150,000

A field of eight are due to head down to post for this year’s Hendrie Stakes.

All eyes will be on the Lorne Richards trained Hazelbrook, who is seeking to defend the title she won twelve months ago.

Since that victory she has raced exclusively at Woodbine, winning two of her four starts. Heading into this year’s race there are question marks over her fitness with this being her first race since finishing second in the 2022 Bessarabian Stakes. The classiest horse in this contest, she will be the one to beat if she shows up ready to race.

Whatever Kazushi Kimura rides has to be respected. The top Woodbine jockey takes the ride of Loyalty who finished a couple of places behind Hazelbrook in the Bessarabian. Unlike her rival, she will head into the race with a run under her belt, winning an Allowance race in good style. She could be one to keep an eye on.

Another horse that brings in form from the Bessarabian is Sweet Enough. Finishing well down the field that day, she is now winless in her last five starts but she does offer a glimmer of hope to potential backers following her second-place finish in the 2023 Royal North Stakes.

Miss Speedy is another who has graded placed form following her second-place finish in the 2023 Whimsical Stakes. She heads into the race having had four runs this year and was finally able to poke her head in front last time out in the 2023 Ballade Stakes. The nature of her win in the Ballade was convincing and she looks to have a great chance.

Baby No Worries is winless in her last four starts and finished a place behind Miss Speedy in the Whimsical. That represents her best effort and she will need to improve if she is to prevail.

Talk To Ya Later, Clitheroe and Hard Edge are all yet to place at this level and will start the contest as the likely outsiders.

Hendrie Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

Based purely on form it looks like Hazelbrook is the horse to back in this year’s Hendrie Stakes, however, there must be concern following the amount of time that she has been off the track for. At a price Miss Speedy could be a player, her win in the Ballade Stakes was dominant and a repeat will see her go close.

Ontario Colleen Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile, Turf, open to three-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: $150,000

Nine horses will head down to post for this year’s Ontario Colleen Stakes. A major contender for the race looks to be Queen Picasso. A winner of both her career starts, she took a massive leap forward when running out a cozy winner of the Soaring Softly Stakes. She looks a smart prospect and will be hopeful of cementing her class and recording a trio of wins.

Blind Spot has had seven career starts but is now winless in her last five. Despite not getting her head in front, she did finish second in the Star Shoot Stakes, so certainly isn’t a forlorn hope.

The most interesting horse in the race is Last Call. A winner of only one of her first six career starts, that win came at the highest level when winning the 2022 Natalma Stakes. Her win in the Natalma came from well off the pace and any backers will require a leap of faith. She is winless in her last three races but has placed on each occasion.

Heading into this year’s Ontario Colleen Stakes as one of the form horses is Mohawk Trail. A good winner last time out in the Alywow Stakes, she finished ahead of Last Call and another reopposing rival Ryder Ryder Ryder. That was her first ever run at Woodbine and she will be hoping to double her tally at the Canadian track this weekend.

The combination of Mark Casse and Patrick Husbands are a deadly combination around Woodbine having combined for multiple graded victories. There best chance looks to sit with Ryder Ryder Ryder who is looking to bounce back from her defeat in the Alywow Stakes. Prior to that disappointing run she had finished ahead of Last Call in the 2023 Ruling Angel Stakes. She is one of the least exposed horses in the field and both Husbands and Casse will hoping for a big run.

Chad Brown is the most dominant turf trainer in North American and Preliminary is another intriguing runner. Having just had two career starts, she showed real signs of progress when winning on debut. Clearly highly thought of, she then made the jump into Grade 2 company, finishing last in the 2023 Edgewood Stakes. Despite the poor result, she started that race as the favorite and at an attractive price she could cement her potential class.

Born To Boogie will be having her first graded start having broken her maiden last time out. Her win came in a competitive contest in which she finished strongly. She is another who can’t be discounted.

Love To Shop, is another last time out winner, however it did take her three bites of the cherry for her to lose her maiden status. She may find life at this level tough and could be the outsider of this race.

Ontario Colleen Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

A whole host of interesting horses will line up for this year’s Ontario Colleen Stakes. Queen Picasso is a horse with a big future and her two successive victories mark her out as the one they will all need to beat. One horse to keep an eye on could be Preliminary. She is clearly highly thought of and will hope to bounce back into form here.
