Hyacinth Stakes & February Stakes 2023 Recap

Lemon Pop keeps his remarkable run going of never finishing outside the first two to bag his first career Grade 1 victory for Godolphin in the February Stakes 2023 while in the Hyacinth Stakes, Perriere storms home late to secure a first career Listed success to make it three wins from four starts, and over $300,000 in winnings and also earns a 30 qualification derby points.

February Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $1,735,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Dirt – 4-Year-Olds & Upwards.

There was drama at the start as Meisho Hario bobbled and nearly unseated the jockey just after the start and soon found himself some 15 lengths behind the speed.

Meanwhile, up front, it was the longshot Shonan Nadeshiko who took the field along the backstretch at a solid pace and he was followed by Helios and Keiei Turquoise.

The chalk and eventual winner LEMON POP also broke well, but jockey Ryusei Sakai was content to take a pull and settle his horse and grab a stalking position back in the seventh spot.

As they passed the 600 meters (3-furlong mark) the order up front had not changed, but it was here that Sakai moved Lemon Pop onto the heels of the leaders and was ready to pounce. He went to the lead with 300 meters to go and soon widened to a two-length lead.

Red Le Zele who was second last as they hit the top of the stretch was now in full flight and closing fast, but the winner held well to win by a length and a half.

Meisho Hario who looked down and out early, produced an astounding run to close late for a slice underneath and he is clearly one to watch out for next time.

Hyacinth Stakes

Listed – Purse $270,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Dirt – 3-Year-Olds

It was Sunday Funday who was eager to be on the speed when the gates opened and he soon went to a two-length lead, with the eventual winner PERRIERE securing a stalking position on the fence with another well-fancied runner Monde Plume on his outside.

As they settled for the backstretch run, the eventual third horse Eclogite rushed up to inject some pace in the race and he led from Sunday Funday and Monde Plume.

Perriere was reined back to sit in a stalking role on the rail and he was followed closely on his outside by Z Lien and Omatsuri Otoko.

As they hit the top of the stretch Eclogite still led but the jockey was in drive mode and he was joined by Sunday Funday who was traveling like a winner.

With 400 meters (2 furlongs to go) Perriere still had work to do in the fourth spot, but he kicked into overdrive and along with Z Lien, they both went past the two long-time leaders with a sixteenth to the wire.

Perriere widened by a length at the line with Z Lien for the place and Eclogite hanging tough to secure the show spot.

The well-fancied Great Sand Sea closed strongly for the fourth spot and is one to watch with a stretch-out in trip giving plenty of upside next time.
