Japan Cup 2023: Equinox romps to a four length victory

Equinox romps to a four-length win to cement his position as the World’s best racehorse and take his career earnings to over $11.7 million. Here the Japan Cup 2023 Recap!

Grade 1 – Purse $6,425,000 – 1 mile 4 furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

It’s now six wins on the trot for this giant son of Kitasan Black, and he did not just beat this field easily, being geared down at the wire, but we have to look at the horses that finished behind him.

The 2023 Japanese 1000 Guineas and 2023 Japanese Oaks winner Liberty Island was in second receiving nearly 9 lbs in weight.

We also had the 2022 Japanese Oaks winner Stars On Earth in the third spot beaten five lengths receiving over 4 lbs.

Equinox has now won eight of his ten career starts and he is sure to be in huge demand when going to stud.

For us as race fans, it would be amazing to see him pitch up at either Royal Ascot in June or the 2024 Breeders Cup at Del Mar next November.

In the race itself, Panthalassa blew the race open going some fifteen lengths clear.

However, Christophe Lemaire had stalked in third spot and when he asked his horse inside the final quarter, the response was electric as he widened before being geared down to win by four lengths.

Liberty Island was second, Stars On Earth third with Do Deuce closing late for the fourth spot.

Keihan Hai Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $523,000 – 6 furlongs – Turf – 3 Year Olds and Up

Toshin Macau goes back to back in the Keihan Hai Stakes as he swoops late to grab victory from the chalk Lugal to win by two lengths.

Toshin Macau came into the race in good form with a couple of board finishes in this spot and was well-fancied on the board at 7/1.

He won this race last year when closing late to beat Kir Lord, and Sunday saw a similar result as he beat the strongly fancied Lugal swooping late over the top to deny the favorite.

This was his fifth win in fifteen career assignments and each of his bigsuccesses, and both graded stakes victories, have come over this six furlong distance.

In the race, Akira Sugawara had his horse positioned mid-pack chasing the speed set by Big Caesar and Vatreni. It looked like Big Caesar might win as he widened at the top of the stretch.

However, both Lugal and Toshin Macau came wide, with the winner strongest in the final sixteenth to widen by two lengths from Lugal, with A Shin Spotter a very late closer in third.

Travesura held well to finish fourth.
