Japan Derby 2023: Tastiera captures 1st G1 victory

Tastiera tastes Grade 1 and Classic success in the Japan Derby 2023, holding off the late rally of the odds on chalk Sol Oriens, in the process avenging his defeat in the Japanese 2000 Guineas.

There was drama right from the start as the well-fancied Dura Erede bobbled badly at the gate and unshipped Ryusie Sakai and it was a mad rush to the clubhouse turn with Pax Ottomanica crossing from his wide gate in 16 to take them into and out of the clubhouse turn, with Ho O Biscuits and Season Rich just behind.

As they went down the backstretch, the leader slowed the pace and the field stacked up in behind.

The odds on chalk Sol Oriens was well positioned in sixth and was stalking the slow pace, while the eventual winner TASTIERA was on his outside, a length in advance in the fifth spot.

Halfway down the backstretch, the leader injected some pace and quickly widened to a ten-length lead but the jockeys in behind were not panicking.

Pax Ottomanica came out of the far turn with 600 meters (3 furlongs) to run and was still eight lengths clear but the pack was closing and first Ho O Biscuits and the Tastiera swooped past at the 300 meters (three-sixteenths) pole.

But the race was not done and Damian Lane was all out on the winner as the chalk, Hearts Concerto, and Bellagio Opera all closed late, but Tastiera held well by a neck with the next two beaten just a further nose and a nose.

Grade 2 Handicap – Purse $775,000 – 2500 meters (1 mile 4 ½ furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Heat On Beat gets up in the shadows of the wire to give jockey Damian Lane a memorable graded stakes double on Derby Day in Japan.

There was no drama at the start as in The Derby and the whole field got away to a clean break, and they went into the clubhouse turn it was the longshot Badenweiler who led the way briefly from Diastima and Balaji.

The pace was slow and the jockey on Diastima wanted to go that bit quicker and took his mount to the speed as they set off down the backstretch. The speed was not blazing fast, just an even gallop.

Meanwhile, the chalk Saliera was sitting mid-pack in the two-lane around eight lengths off the speed and the eventual winner HEAT ON BEAT was on the immediate inside of the favorite.

As they exited the backstretch it was still Diastima leading and he kicked from the 400 meter (2-furlong pole) and looked like he had stolen the race.

However, Damian Lane had now got daylight on Heat On Beat. He still had a length to find with a sixteenth to run but rallied very late to put his nose in front literally right on the wire to thwart the amazing gate-to-wire attempt of Diastima.

Saliera closed late for the third spot, and the fourth horse Zeffiro came from way back and is one to watch next time.
