Joel Stakes 2023: Mutasaabeq Struck Gold

Mutasaabeq takes advantage of a tactical race and goes gate-to-wire to win back-to-back editions of the Joel Stakes following his victory in the 2022 edition. Here the Joel Stakes 2023 Recap

Breeders Cup Odds

Joel Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $149,500 – 1 mile – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

The talk before the race centered around the returning Maljoom who had shown high-class form before an injury which had kept him off the track for fifteen months.

However, it was Mutasaabeq, last year’s winner who took advantage of Maljoom’s lack of fitness and his foes willingness to let him have an easy lead setting his own fractions.

The Charlie Hills trained horse was winning his third Grade 2 after taking the 2023 Bet 365 Mile here on his seasonal debut, and all these wins have come at Newmarket, and he will surely pitch up either on British Champions Day at Ascot in October or maybe at the Breeders Cup in November to try and gain that elusive first top table victory.

In the race itself, he bounced from the gates, grabbed the far rail, and made all of the running.

It was not without a battle, as both Regal Reality and Chindit closed in the final sixteenth, but Mutasaabeq held gamely to beat Regal Reality by a head with the consistent Chindit back in third spot, and these were clear of Epictetus in fourth spot.
