The Joel Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $149,500 – 1 mile – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Only a small field goes to the gate for the 2023 Joel Stakes and it is a wide-open race with the dual winner Maljoom at 11/4 on the morning line odds.

He broke the maiden tag the first time when taking a maiden event at Doncaster in March 2022 and then stepped up next time when going back to back in an Allowance level contest at Kempton when beating a horse called Saga.

That horse now has a rating of 106 so it will be interesting to see how Maljoom performs coming back from a layoff of 472 days after sustaining an injury on his last run when finishing fourth in the 2022 Grade 1 St James Palace Stakes where he was just behind the classic winner Coroebus.

This is an easier race but the big question is will he be able to take advantage of the class drop against race fit rivals?

Chindit 4/1 comes here on a hat-trick after winning the 2023 Grade 3 Superior Mile Stakes two back, before following up on the class drop to take the 2023 Listed Fortune Stakes at Sandown where he battled bravely for the win.

In the Haydock Race, he finished in front of another of today’s foes Regal Reality 5/1 who was the chalk that day. However, Regal Reality might turn that form around as he had been running against much tougher foes.

He was badly positioned that day and is a danger to all here and will be stalking the early speed which is likely to be set by last year’s winner Mutasaabeq 4/1.

Mutasaabeq has been well held in recent starts but they have come against tougher foes and he will be dangerous if given an easy time setting his own fractions. With just six runners, this could be a tactical affair, and being on the speed could pay dividends

The other two in the race are Epictetus 5/1 and Mighty Ulysses 5/1, who are both representing the Gosden barn.

Of those two, it is Mighty Ulysses who arrives in better form after winning the 2023 Grade 3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury last time. He needs to step forward but is a lightly raced four-year-old and still has plenty of improvement to come

2023 Joel Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

A difficult race to call and although Chindit is in top form, the best he can probably hope for today is a slice underneath.

There is no doubt here that MALJOOM would win this if fully fit, with his St James Palace Stakes run in 2022 the clear best piece of form on the card and he gets a narrow vote to showcase the skills of master handler William Haggas.

Mutabaaseq and Regal Reality are sure to be challenging for a spot underneath.
