King Edward VII Stakes & Albany Stakes Odds and Picks

The Friday of Royal Ascot has always been regarded as one of the most special days in racing. Headlined by the Coronation Stakes, there are two other top-quality races on Friday’s card – the King Edward VII Stakes and Albany Stakes.

Breeders Cup Odds

The King Edward VII Stakes will see just six horses compete for this year’s crown. Favorite for the race is the Roger Varian trained King of Steel who will be looking to put his Derby heartache behind him with a positive showing here.

Friday’s racing will kick off with this year’s renewal of the Albany. With eighteen horses set to head down to post, the Albany is often regarded as one of the most competitive contests of the week. Current favorites are Soprano for George Boughey and Carla’s Way for Simon & Ed Crisford. Both were last time out winners and will be hoping to cement their status as the most promising two-year-olds in Europe.

King Edward VII Stakes

Group 2, 1 mile and 4 furlongs, turf, open to three-year-old horses. Total prize pool: £250,000

Only six horses are due to head down to post for this year’s King Edward VII Stakes.

Roger Varian has never trained the winner of this race but looks to have a great chance of ending that unwanted record with King Of Steel.

A winner on debut, two subsequent defeats have followed, but his narrow defeat in the Derby has rightly positioned himself at the top of the betting.

The rank outsider of the Derby field, he ran a huge race to belittle odds of +6600 – whilst others might be more consistent, if he can re-produce his Derby effort, he will be tough to beat.

Arrest for John and Thady Gosden was positioned as the Derby favorite but ran a poor race to only finish in tenth place. With three wins from six starts, his connections will be hopeful of a solid bounce back performance here.

Aidan O’Brien has won two of the last four editions of this race including a success in the race last year. Once again, he arrives strong handed with Continuous, who despite winning his first two races, has struggled in both the Dante and Prix du Jockey Club. Looking to rediscover his best form he could be an attractive option at a decent price.

Ralph Beckett is another trainer who is looking to land this contest for the first time, and he looks to have an outside shot with Artistic Star. A winner of both of his career starts, he is another who headed to the Derby with high hopes but could only finish in seventh place. The winner of the Darley Stakes, that form rates him as a player and if you are looking to back a horse at a bigger price, he could be the one to be on.

Rounding out the field are Dubai Mile and Relentless Voyager both are due to start as double figure prices and will need to produce a career best performance if they are to come out on top here.

King Edward VII Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

Based on King Of Steel’s second place finish in the Derby he will rightly start as the heavy favorite for the contest. However he must show that he can back that performance up and it could be worth taking him on with Arrest. The favorite for the Derby, he never fired, but back on a more conventional track he looks to have a major chance.

Albany Stakes

Group 3, 6 furlongs, turf, open to two-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: £100,000

Eighteen runners have been declared for this year’s Albany Stakes in what looks set to be a wide-open renewal.

George Boughey has quickly emerged as one of the leading trainers in Europe and looks to have a fantastic chance of adding another graded prize with Soprano. Having had just the one career run, her debut victory in Maiden company was nicely done where she won with plenty in hand. She looks like a potentially smart horse but does have a wide draw to potentially overcome.

At the opposite end of the starting stalls will be the Simon & Ed Crisford trained Carla’s Way. Like Soprano, she has just had one career start which saw her win her maiden with ease. Another horse capable of being potentially special, her connections will be hopeful of another bold showing.

Roger Varian has a good record in this race having won the Albany back in 2019 and 2014. He looks to have a great chance of winning the race for the third time with Jabaara. Having won her Maiden very impressively, she clearly could win a race of this nature.

Aidan O’Brien has already had a positive week and he will be looking to win the Albany for the second consecutive year. Matrika looks to have won a tough looking Irish Maiden in her one and only start and could be capable of further improvement here. Likely to start at a decent price she could be an attractive value option.

Outside of Matrika there are two other leading Irish fancies. The Donnacha O’Brien Porta Fortuna was able to edge out Navassa Island, in a competitive race. A winner of both of her career starts, she arrives at the Albany having raced more than most and that experience could prove crucial.

There could be bigger and better and things to come from Navassa Island who despite losing out to Porta Fortuna only lost narrowly. With improvement bound to be on the cards she could be one to watch with real interest.

Albany Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

This year’s Albany looks wide open with all the horses in the field looking to hold some sort of chance. Both Soprano and Carla’s Way posted impressive debut results, but Jabaara could be one to watch. Her debut victory was won by a wide margin and at a decent price she could be the one to back.
