The King George Qatar Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $377,000 – 5 furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

The six-year-old mare Highfield Princess is the strong chalk here getting class relief, and rated 117 she is suited by the conditions of the race as she receives an allowance from the boys.

US fans will know her from the 2022 Breeders Cup where she finished fourth in the 2022 Grade 1 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint. She meets nothing of that caliber here at Goodwood on Friday, and having already run well at this track, everything seems set for a big run.

Her closest challenger at the morning line odds is the Charlie Hills barn inmate Equality 5/1 who comes here after landing a recent double.

He was beaten in the 2023 Grade 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock in May but has since gone back to back, first in a handicap at Windsor when winning by five and a half lengths, and then recently when stepping up the class ladder to take the Grade 3 Coral Charge at Sandown where he stalked the pace before widening in the final furlong.

It’s important to note that both times he has run at Goodwood he has disappointed, so a question mark on the track suitability.

It’s 10/1 and bigger the remainder of the runners on the morning line but two that could be played across the board and in exotics are Silky Wilkie and Ladies Church.

Silky Wilkie was second two back in the fastest five-furlong race in the world (The Epsom Dash)

Silky Wilkie was second in the 2023 running of the Aston Martin “Dash” Handicap at Epsom when meeting traffic problems but was only beaten a short head.

He stepped forward on that to run a career-best with another runner-up effort in the 2023 Listed City Walls Stakes at York, once again closing strongly over the speedy five-furlong track on the Knavesmire. He is improving and should again be closing strongly.

The Irish raider Ladies Church won the 2023 Listed Sole Power Sprint Stakes at Naas Racecourse two back, before a solid effort to finish fourth in the 2023 Grade 2 Sapphire Stakes at The Curragh

2023 King George Qatar Stakes Odds & Prediction

Equality is in top form but returning to Goodwood raises question marks and he is eliminated from our top three in preference for Silky Wilkie, who is progressing well and will have a fast pace to close into.

However, the clear selection is HIGHFIELD PRINCESS who takes a class drop and should be far too good for this bunch.

Both Ladies Church and the big longshot Ponntos should be in the mix for a slice underneath.
