Grade 3 – Purse $545,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds Fillies & Mares

It was a quick pace right from the off with Nishino Cashmere setting a strong pace and leading down the backstretch from the 100/1 shot On The Blossom and the well-fancied Uvarovite.

Eventual winner HARPER had broken well but was settled back in seventh spot by Yuga Kawada with a clear view of the leaders, while top fancy Doe Eyes was inside on the rail in eighth spot.

The order changed little down the backstretch and at this point, the favorite Umbrail had moved closer and was now just six lengths from the front.

As they started the run from the backstretch, it was still Nishino Cashmere leading the way, but the challengers were queueing in behind, and as they spread across the track and set down for the drive, it was here that Doe Eyes found a seam on the rail and she took up the running with a furlong to go.

However, she was soon joined by Harper who had come between rivals to take the lead, and these two battled to the wire with Moryana coming late to take the third spot.

Harper held well in the final furlong to win by a neck and a nose.

A mention has to be given to the fourth horse England Eyes who came from way back and closed strongly to finish in the fourth spot, less than a length behind the winner.

Kyoto Kinen

Grade 2 – Purse $915,000 – 2200 meters (1 mile 3 furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

This was a potentially exciting Grade 2 with the class dropper Do Deuce looking to hold a strong chance, along with the top class Efforia.

As the gates opened, it was Unicorn Lion who was keen to get to the lead, and he crossed from gate six to get to the rail and set the speed. He was followed closely by King Of Dragon and Killer Ability.

The pace was not breakneck and after breaking slowly from gate one, the eventual runner-up Matenro Leo had quickly moved into a nice stalking position on the rail in the fourth spot.

As they set off down the backstretch, the eventual winner DO DEUCE was far back, and the pace remained slow with Unicorn Lion at the head of affairs, with the well-fancied Efforia now moving into second to track the pace.

As they hit the top of the homestretch Unicorn Lion was still holding sway but Pradaria moved into second as Efforia dropped away after going lame. The winner Do Deuce had made smooth progress and made his move in the four-lane, and as soon as Yutaka Take pushed the button, the response was electric and the winner soon widened by 4 lengths.

Matenro Leo who got caught in traffic did well to rally for second, but the winner had flown and won by an easy three and a half lengths in hand.

Pradaria held well to secure the show spot.

2. Matenro Leo $3.20

Grade 3 – Purse $585,000 – 1800 meters (1 mile 1 furlong) – Turf – 3 -Year-Olds

As they bounced out of the gate it was Kyoei Brisa and Season Rich who were quickest away, but they were soon passed by the eventual winner PHANTOM THIEF and then by the runner-up Touch Wood.

Touch Wood was going to make this a stamina test and he widened two lengths clear of the eventual winner, with a further three lengths back to the chasing pack.

As they exited the far turn, it was still Touch Wood in front, but the pack had started to close and the eventual fourth Tastiera had now moved to within three lengths of the lead, while the eventual third Danon The Tiger went for a gap in the four-lane but was halted in his run.

As they hit the 400 meter (2 furlong) mark, Christophe Lemaire asked the winner for his effort and he only went to the front around a sixteenth from the wire but quickly widened by a length to win comfortably in the end.

Touch Wood held well for second, while Danon The Tiger rallied strongly to take third close to the wire, and his run can be upgraded after traffic problems in the home stretch.
