Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes & Gulfstream Turf Sprint Recap

The improving One Identity takes another step forward to run out a comfortable winner of the Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes on Saturday evening at Gulfstream Park.

It was a quick break from last year’s winner Yes I Am Free and he was given an easy lead with the other four rivals content to sit and stalk the pace in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint.

Gulfstream Turf Sprint

Grade 3 – Purse $125,000 – 5 Furlongs – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Yes I Am Free breaks smartly and hangs tough to go gate to wire and win his second successive Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint.

It was not slow as they went through the quarter in a very sharp 21.75 secs.

Yes I Am Free bowled along in front, while County Final tracked him on the inside of the chalk Carotari who had perfect position under Joel Rosario in the two-lane with clear sight to the leader.

Shekky Shebaz was around 3 lengths off the lead outside of Belgrano who was caught in a pocket on the inside.

As they turned into the stretch, the eventual winner YES I AM FREE was still leading and it was here that jockey Vasquez asked his mount to go and win his race. He widened by a length, but Rosario was wise to the move and set off in pursuit. But trying as hard as he could, the leader battled bravely and held well to go gate to wire and win by half a length.

Shekky Shebaz had come three wide into the stretch and he threatened briefly before weakening late.
The other well-fancied runner, Belgrano, was ultimately disappointing. He pitched into the four lane coming into the home stretch, but could not produce his customary late surge and finished only fourth, while County Final was only beaten a little over two lengths in the last spot.

Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes

Stakes – Purse $100,000 – 5 Furlongs – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up Fillies & Mares

The improving One Identity takes another step forward to run out a comfortable winner of the Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes on Saturday evening at Gulfstream Park.

The race was denied seeing the fantastic Miss J McKay who was scratched late on, which opened up a good opportunity for the rest of the field.

As the gates flew open, it was clear this was going to be run at a fast pace, as the longshot War Of Ages and eventual runner Charlie T went head to head and flashed past the first quarter pole in a very fast 21.43 secs.

While the two upfront went head to head, perennial closer Mamba Wamba was out the back and sitting some eight lengths from the lead, while eventual winner ONE IDENTITY had found a lovely spot in third tracking the speed.

As they came out of the backstretch and into the home stretch, One Identity had got caught in a pocket on the inside as Stoney Point had come up on the outside into the third spot, with Imagery tracking these in fifth. Paco Lopez on the winner looked to go inside but was blocked in the run.

War Of Ages and Charlie T were still battling it out in front, but War of Ages drifted to the rail and Lopez took advantage to make his run between the two long-time leaders.
With a furlong to run, Charlie T still held a slim lead, but One Identity ran her rival down late to take the win by half a length.

Mamba Wamba who had been out the back early had to pitch into the five lane to make her run and got going far too late. She closed very strongly in the final sixteenth and was only beaten a neck for second, a performance that can be marked up, and she should be back in the winner’s enclosure soon enough.
