Lonsdale Cup & Gimcrack Stakes Betting Odds

The undercard at York on Friday embraces both extremes of the sport, with whip-quick two-year-old colts such as Kylian, Johannes Brahms and King’s Gamble vying for the G2 Gimcrack, and seasoned stayers renewing rivalry in the G2 Lonsdale Cup, with G1 Ascot Gold Cup exacta Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane taking on last year’s freewheeling winner Quickthorn.

Gimcrack Stakes

G2, £267,500, 6f fast turf (straight), 2yo colts, 10.00am ET

Ten runners, ten previous winners. The Gimcrack, the main supporting feature at York on Friday, is a fast-twitch sprint that brings together a few experienced types and a handful of greenhorns to provide bettors with an intriguing puzzle to solve.

Atypically, Aidan O’Brien has not won this race since 2001, but has a strong contender in Johannes Brahms, favorite for a big-field stakes at Royal Ascot over five furlongs last time but only second-best behind Big Evs, who won a G3 next time out. Hala Emaraaty was seventh, two and three-quarter lengths further back, while Action Point trailed in 15th.

Johannes Brahms won on debut over six furlongs at Naas and the return to that distance looks a positive, while improvement is highly likely after just two starts. Action Point won a six-furlong stakes at Newbury on his next start and should be more of a player this time.

That G3 won by Big Evs was the 2023 Molecomb at Goodwood over five furlongs, in which Kylian was joint-favourite and finished third, beaten a length and a half. Everything happened too quickly for him at that minimum distance on a sharp downhill track, and he only got into gear when the race was over.

Today’s conditions are much more suitable and Kylian won a stakes at Sandown by six lengths on his previous start, with Hala Emaraaty fourth. Further back, he was beaten a neck by Emperor’s Son at little Carlisle, but Emperor’s Son made no show in the 2023 G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and Kylian has been on the up-and-up since that defeat.

King’s Gamble got it right first time over six furlongs at Newmarket, with 1-3 favorite Lake Forest a major flop in fourth, beaten three and a half lengths. The faster ground should help Lake Forest but it is tough to see him flipping the form, given that King’s Gamble is entitled to move right up for that introduction. Inexperience could be an issue in this much better grade, though.

This is a cutback for Haatem, who showed improvement for stretching out to seven furlongs when first chasing home the brilliant City Of Troy at Newmarket, and then making his stakes breakthrough in the 2023 G2 Vintage at Goodwood, when it did not look like he wanted to go shorter. His class is apparent but this is a big test.

Kevin Ryan has won this race four times but may not make it five with Jehangeer, who broke his maiden by just a neck at second-tier Ayr last time, while Power Mode would prefer softer turf on the evidence of his fair fourth in the 2023 G3 Cabourg at Deauville over six furlongs.

There is better form out there but KING’S GAMBLE looked full of promise when winning on debut, and could easily improve past more seasoned rivals.

Lonsdale Cup

G2, £250,000, 2m fast turf, 3yo+, 9.25am ET

There are rematches and old rivalries, sure, but they have nothing on the Lonsdale Cup, which is a straight photocopy of the 2023 G1 Goodwood Cup over two miles. Five of today’s seven runners – and all the likely winners – come here en bloc 24 days later, but an identical outcome is unlikely given the extraordinary circumstances of that contest.

Now and again it happens that one particular horse gets a soft lead and stays away. This was an incredible example of that, as the noted front-runner Quickthorn went to the lead as usual and no-one did a thing about it.

At halfway he was around 20 lengths clear, in a world of his own, and although the posse eventually got busy the race was done, Quickthorn cruising by six lengths and the jockeys on the other horses suitably embarrassed. Coltrane was third, Giavellotto was fifth, the favoured Courage Mon Ami was sixth and Broome finished seventh.

This was not a new thing. In this race 12 months ago Quickthorn played exactly the same game, steaming a mile clear at halfway and this time not easing down, crossing the line 14 lengths clear of Coltrane, with Nate The Great a distant sixth and last. Surely the jockeys on the opposition will not make the same mistake again?

The marathon circuit pits these horses against each other time and again, as was the case in the showpiece 2023 G1 Gold Cup over two and a half miles at Royal Ascot, when the then-unbeaten Courage Mon Ami stepped right up from the minors to beat Coltrane by three-quarters of a length, with Nate The Great fifth and Broome tenth.

The softer turf at Goodwood may have contributed to Courage Mon Ami’s eclipse, but it was obviously not the only reason. Less boneheaded tactics will make him a major player again and Coltrane is the epitome of consistency who is back over his best distance now.

Giavellotto sprang a surprise in the 2023 G2 Yorkshire Cup here over a mile and three-quarters in May, when Broome was beaten a length and a half into third and Quickthorn – who never got crazy loose out front – another length and a half into fourth. Giavellotto acts well here and could be an overlay, and Broome will like the ground but probably does not have the legs at the age of seven.

River Of Stars is an improving filly, and can be forgiven her defeat on terrible ground at Goodwood last time. She is better judged on her second-place in the 2023 G2 Maurice de Nieuil over a mile and three-quarters at Longchamp, when she stayed on strongly through the closing stages to be beaten three-quarters of a length, but she will need more today in this much tougher race.

If they let him go, Quickthorn could stay away, but granted a normal tactical shape to the race COLTRANE can reap deserved reward for his consistency.
