The G1 Alabama at Saratoga is one of the biggest races of the year for three-year-old fillies, and on Saturday we saw a champion in action as Nest cruised to a third G1 success in authoritative fashion. Here is our 2022 Alabama Stakes Recap.
Nest is the best
Alabama Stakes, G1, $600,000, 1m 2f, 3yo fillies
It looks like an easy choice for end-of-year honors in the three-year-old filly division, after Nest cemented her place at the top of the pile with a dominant success in the 2022 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday afternoon.
The top-class daughter of Curlin left no-one in any doubt of her superiority, the 1-5 favorite taking over on the lead from longshot She’s Keen approaching the quarter-pole and quickly clearing away to beat old rival Secret Oath by four and a quarter lengths, eased down in the closing stages by Irad Ortiz, stopping the clock in 2:03 and one-fifth. Nest’s barnmate Goddess Of Fire kept on for the show spot, two lengths back.
It was Nest’s sixth win of an increasingly brilliant nine-race career that includes two more G1 victories in the Ashland and the Coaching Club American Oaks, and the runner-up spot in the G1 Kentucky Oaks and the G1 Belmont Stakes. All roads now lead to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on November 5.
“That was a special performance,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, gaining back-to-back wins in the Alabama and his fourth overall. “She has run well every start of her life, and this is the sort of thing we expect from her now.”
