NHK Mile Cup Odds & Shimbun Hai Picks

Can Dolce More bounce back from his dull seasonal debut and show his true class in the NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo or will Eeyan continue his rise up the ranks and collect his second successive graded stakes win?

NHK Mile Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $1,888,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 3-Year-Old Colts & Fillies

Dolce More is the current chalk here and the morning line odds are about right. He was a three-time winner at two years old when he won the Grade Three Saudi Arabia Cup before stepping up the class ladder to win the Asai Hai Futurity Stakes from the fast-finishing Danon Touchdown.

He came back this year on the class drop but was clearly lacking fitness after a nearly 100-day layoff and will definitely be much sharper this time around.

It won’t be easy as we have plenty of foes with graded stakes form and a recent improver has been Eeyan who took the Grade 2 New Zealand Trophy at Nakayama on his first try at graded stakes level. He steps up the class ladder but has a great post position to adopt his close stalking tactics.

Others here with solid graded stakes back form are Sing That Song (who won the Grade 2 Hochi Hai Fillies Revue) All Parfait (who won the Grade 2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes) and Obamburumai 8/1 who is already a G2 and G3 winner. He won that G3, The Arlington Cup at Hanshin just three weeks ago, so we know he is in top form and will be 100% sharp and fit.

More unexposed types that should be to the fore in this include Moryana , Shomon , Cruzeiro Du Sul, Carro Veloce, and Danon Touchdown

The last named recently finished last of the eighteen runners in the Japanese 2000 Guineas, but that surely was not his running. He was very fresh after the layoff and pulled his way into the leading group early.

Hi run style last season was as a closer and it’s important to note, he just failed to beat both Dolce More and All Parfait last season, on both occasions closing late and fast and losing by the narrowest of margins. Expect a much better showing today.

2023 NHK Mile Odds & Betting Pick

Dolce More ran a decent race first time this season and is sure to improve on that showing and he’ll be very tough to keep off the board.

However, the vote goes to DANON TOUCHDOWN who was just too free last time and is much better than he showed there. He gets a narrow vote to close late and come out on top.

Obamburumai, Eeyan, and Carro Veloce are others who should be fighting for a slice underneath.

Shimbun Hai

Grade 2 – Purse $780,000 – 2200 meters (1 mile 3 furlongs) miles) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

Can Meiner Laulea take advantage of the class drop to register his third win in four starts after a disappointing run in the Japanese 2000 Guineas?

No doubt the horse with the best form is Meiner Laulea and he was last seen contesting the Grade 1 Japanese 2000 Guineas where he was outclassed. Connections must have thought highly of him to run there and he now gets some class relief.

He broke the maiden tag at Hanshin in December and then followed up to make it two from two in the Listed Wakagoma Stakes when stalking the pace and asserting late on. This stretch-out in distance gives plenty of upside and he’ll be trying to get back on the winning trail.

The other runners in the race are more unexposed types and for sure Makoto Velikij is an interest having run well when fourth in a maiden first time, but he found a chunk of improvement to break the maiden tag when stretching out to this distance next time.

Satono Glanz also looks like a potential improver. He was well held on his introduction last year but has stepped forward in three runs this year. He broke the maiden tag second time and has since won the Yukayinagi Sho, a minor stakes race over 2400 meters (1 ½ miles at Hanshin) this is a step up the class ladder, but he is going to be a strong closer here.

Of the other runners, then Danon Tornado, Maxi, and Libyan Glass all look like potential foes that can give the likely chalk Meiner Laulea plenty to think about.

Of those three, then Libyan Glass looks the most likely. He was fourth the first time and has since gone on to win his next two and he could be one that will attempt to go gate-to-wire here.

Shimbun Hai Odds & Betting Prediction

Satono Glanz is improving and developing fast and he should get a nice race set up with Libyan Glass likely to make a bid to be on the speed. However, he will need to find plenty of improvement to beat the chalk.

The clear selection here is MEINER LAULEA who takes a massive drop down the class ladder and can get back to winning ways against what should be slightly lesser foes.

Makoto Velikij and Libyan Glass can be fighting to hit the board here.
