Oka Sho 2023: Liberty Island kicks off her 3yo old campaign

Liberty Island runs out an emphatic winner of The Japanese 1000 Guineas showing an explosive burst of speed to come from near last to first in the final two furlongs. Here our Oka Sho 2023 Recap

Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas)

Grade 1 – Purse $2,305,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) –  Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

We certainly saw a superstar here in LIBERTY ISLAND, who put in a devastating performance, coming from an uncompromising position to take out the first fillies classic of the season in Japan.

From the start, it was the expected pace coming from Mozu Meimei and she led from Kona Coast and Tosen Laurier who had tacked across from her wide draw in gate 18.

Meanwhile, the chalk and eventual winner Liberty Island was off a bit slow and traveling on the inside three from the back and about twelve lengths off the pacesetting Mozu Meimei.

As they hit the top of the home stretch, Kona Coast laid down the challenge to the long-time leader and moved to lead at the two-furlong marker, meanwhile, Yuga Kawada angled the favorite into the six-lane but still had ten lengths to make up.

Kona Coast and Perifania set down in what looked a two-horse finish, but Liberty Island was now in full flow and showed a blistering turn of speed to hit the front in the shadows of the wire to win by three-quarters of a length.

Kona Coast held second from Perifania with Harper running late for the fourth spot.

Hanshin Himba Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $803,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up – Fillies And Mares

Sound Vivace causes a big upset in the Grade 2 Hai Hanshin Himba to secure her first graded states success and take her career earnings to nearly $750,000.

As expected, it was Win Charlotte who took the field along on the speed, and she set some quick fractions. It was always going to be a question though of if she would stay this distance.

As the field settled, the eventual winner SOUND VIVACE had got into a nice stalking position in second while Sublime Anthem had also broken well from her inside gate, and she stalked the leader down the backstretch.

Win Charlotte steadied the pace midway down the backstretch, causing the field to close up, the jockey intent on trying to save a bit of energy for the homestretch run, knowing his mount might not see out the mile.

One of the fancied runners Mama Cocha made a quick move to go into third at this point, while the chalk Rouge Stiria was waited with three from the back.

They hit the home stretch and Win Charlotte went for the wire and widened by a length and a half, but Sound Vivace covered the move. These two settled down going head to head but Win Charlotte gave way in the final sixteenth and Sound Vivace went on to win with the unlucky Sublime Anthem closing late after meeting traffic problems in the final furlong.

Costa Bonita closed strongly for third with the early pacesetter Win Charlotte holding well for fourth.

New Zealand Trophy

Grade 2 – Purse $797,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) –  Turf – 3-Year-Olds

Eeyan brings up his hat trick, and in the process secures his first graded stakes success in the Grade 2 New Zealand Trophy, winning by an easy length and a quarter.

As the gates opened, it was the chalk Dolce More who wanted to force the speed and he got to the front followed by the big longshots Sunrise Sieg and Bagradas.

Meanwhile, the well-fancied winner EEYAN had also broken well and sat in a nice stalking position in the fourth spot outside in the three-lane where he had a clear view of the leader.

As they went down the backstretch and reached the 600 meters (3 furlongs) mark, it was here that Dolce More applied more pressure and widened a couple of lengths clear of Bagradas and Eeyan who was still in hand under Mirco Demuro.

At the top of the stretch run, the chalk was asked for more but he soon emptied and it was here that Demuro sent Eeyan to the front and he soon widened two lengths clear to run out a comfortable winner.

The runner-up Umbrail took a hefty bump in the home stretch and would undoubtedly have finished closer having closed late and strong.

22/1 shot Champagne Color held well for the third spot with another late closer Moryana taking fourth on the wire.
