PALACE PIER WINS G1 LOCKINGE STAKES

One of last year’s pre-eminent milers, the John and Thady Gosden-trained Palace Pier posted a 1.5 length victory in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.  Settled towards the rear of the pack as Lord Campari took them along, 50 year old jockey Frankie Dettori was sitting in the cat bird seat with two furlongs out, and once the time was right, he let the 1-2 favorite loose and was an easy winner cementing his position as one of the top milers in Europe.

Lady Bowthorpe ran the race of her life to finish second and Top Rank finished third, another five and a half lengths back.
This was Palace Pier’s third triumph at the highest level after he took the St. James’s Palace Stakes (G1) and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1) last year.  Next up for Palace Pier will be the G1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot where he is -150 (1/2) according to the Jazzsports future book.

The Lockinge Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile at Newbury Racecourse.

The Lockinge Stakes became part of the British Champions Series in 2011. It is currently the second race in the mile division, which concludes with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in October.  The leading horses from the Lockinge Stakes often go on to compete in the Queen Anne Stakes. The last to win both races in the same year was Frankel in 2012.
