Philip H Iselin Stakes Odds & Betting Picks

Six horses are due to head down to post for this year’s Grade 3 Philip H Iselin Stakes at Monmouth Park.

In what looks a wide-open betting heat, the Brad Cox trained Zozos will be looking for a fourth successive victory following wins in the 2023 Hanshin Stakes and 2023 Knicks Go Overnight Stakes.

Philip Iselin Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and a sixteenth, dirt, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool: $250,000

Brad Cox will be hoping to land a second Philip Iselin Stakes this Saturday. The Kentucky based trainer has had a highly productive season so far and will hope to land another graded prize here with the exciting Zozos.

Clearly getting better with age, Zozos has had a remarkable 2023 which has yielded three wins from his last four starts. He has taken the step from Allowance company to Stakes races in his stride and has already landed both the 2023 Hanshin Stakes and 2023 Knicks Go Overnight Stakes. This race represents another step up in class, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him run another big race.

Hoping to not let Zozos get too far ahead will be the Todd Pletcher trained Weyburn. A winner of four of his fifteen career starts, he has been a regular at this level. Whilst a graded prize remains elusive, he was a good winner of the 2023 Sir Shackleton Stakes and that form certainly gives him a live chance.

Trademark for Victoria Oliver is another who should warrant heavy consideration. He arrives at the race following a gutsy victory in the 2023 Michael G Schaefer Stakes and unlike most in this field is a winner at this level, having poked his head in front in the 2023 Commonwealth Turf Stakes. By no means a prolific winner, if he can put it altogether, he will be a danger to the rest of the field.

Steal Sunshine clearly likes this time of year as he captured his greatest prize to date last August when a good winner of the 2022 Ellis Park Derby. Since that victory he has been highly tried but is without a win in his last six starts. He can boast a third-place finish in the 2022 Grade 3 Mr Prospector Stakes but has form to reverse with Weyburn who he finished behind in the 2023 Sir Shackleton Stakes.

The most intriguing horse in the race could well be Whelen Springs. Having spent most of his career in Allowance company he ran really well last time out when finishing second in the 2023 Grade 3 Monmouth Cup Stakes. Despite not winning, that was the best run of his career, and he could be an attractive value angle for the race.

Rounding out the field is Far Mo Power. Winless in his last four starts, he has struggled back in Allowance company and looks like he has plenty to find if he is to repeat his Stakes wins of the past.

2023 Philip H Iselin Stakes Betting Pick

A wide open contest awaits in this year’s Philip Iselin Stakes. Whilst there can’t be any horses that can be discounted, big things are expected of Zozos and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him continue his recent winning form.
