Pocahontas Stakes Odds & More Churchill Downs Races

Churchill Downs hosts a top-quality card on Saturday which includes three top quality Grade 3 races in the shape of the Pocahontas Stakes, Iroquois Stakes, Locust Grove Stakes and Open Mind Stakes.

In the Pocahontas Stakes, Brad Cox will be hoping he will be able to add to his graded haul with Youalmosthadme. A dominant winner of the 2023 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes, she will start as the horse to beat and place herself firmly in the Kentucky Oaks picture.

All signs point towards the Kentucky Derby in the Iroquois Stakes. In what looks like a wide-open renewal, Risk It for Steve Asmussen is due to start as the favorite. He won his Maiden in stunning fashion and will hope to put himself in the early Derby reckoning with another big performance.

Next on track is the Locust Grove Stakes. Offering the biggest prize pool of the day, a field of eleven are set to compete for this year’s prize. Search Results has raced in some of America’s biggest races of late and back in these calmer waters will be looking to win her first graded prize since her victory in the 2022 Molly Pitcher Stakes.

Rounding off Saturday’s action is the Open Mind Stakes. Wicked Halo will start as the undoubted favorite and will hope to round off a great day for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Here the 2023 Pocahontas Stakes Race Recap

Pocahontas Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile, dirt, open to two-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: $300,000

Nine horses have been declared for this year’s Pocahontas Stakes, where Youalmosthadme will start the race as the favorite.

This will be her fourth start and she will be looking to get back on the winning trail following a defeat last time out in the 2023 Debutante Stakes. A winner of the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes, that form stacks up well in this field and her connections will be hopeful of another big showing.

The winner of the Debutante Stakes was Hot Beach, and she will be looking for a second consecutive win. In the Debutante she beat Youalmosthadme by two lengths and there isn’t a guarantee that the placings will be immediately overturned. Set to give her running again, she is bound to be a hugely popular selection.

Likely to round out the top three in the betting is V V’s Dream. After a victory on her debut, she could only finish second in the Spinaway Stakes. Looking to bounce back this weekend, this impeccably bred filly will hope to play a major role in proceedings.

When looking beyond the top three in the betting, Empire Island looks to be an attractive value option. Raced only once, her debut victory came in determined fashion, and with further improvement to come she looks a real contender.

Courbe will start at a big price but is another who heads into the race fresh off the back of a debut victory. The speed figure of that win suggests that she has a bit to find with some of the principles, but she could be an option for those who like to back horses at bigger prices.

Rounding out the field are Peignoir, Riperton, Raining Sugar and Regal Rumor.

Pocahontas Stakes Odds & Racing Pick

An exciting renewal of the Pocahontas Stakes awaits, where several horses are in with a chance of victory. Youalmosthadme must be respected, but the nature of Hot Beach’s victory in the Debutante Stakes can’t be ignored and she is the tentative selection.

Iroquois Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile, dirt, open to two-year-old horses. Total prize pool: $300,000

The start of next year’s Kentucky Derby preparations begins with this year’s renewal of the Iroquois Stakes. Nine talented horses are due to head down to post and the race looks wide open.

Set to start as the favorite is Risk It. A good winner of his one and only start, the speed figure he clocked that day is the amongst the best in the race. Exceptionally bred, he will start as the horse they all need to beat.

Hoping to give Risk It a real race is Patriot Spirit. A devasting winner of his debut, he has been impressive in the pre-race breeze ups. Boasting a formidable speed figure he should be a real contender here.

Any Todd Pletcher two-year-old must be respected, and the master trainer sends out Union Roll. A winner of his debut at Monmouth Park, the speed figure wasn’t as quick as either Risk It or Patriot Spirit, but with improvement on the cards he could be the best value option of the race.

West Saratoga is the most experienced horse in the field but needed five races to break his maiden. When he finally was able to win, the nature and time of his win was impressive, and it seems that the penny has finally dropped. He could be a valid outsider.

Arriving with something to prove are Edified and Market Street. Both were victorious on their debuts but were beaten last time out in the Herb Moelis Memorial Saratoga Special Stakes and the Saratoga Special Stakes respectively. Both will need to run to their very best if they are to pull off the upset.

Completing the line up are Seize the Grey, Gettysburg Address and Liberal Arts.

Iroquois Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

A brilliant race awaits in this year’s Iroquois Stakes. With the connections of all nine horses hoping that their horses could be next year’s Kentucky Derby hero, this race will provide serious clues ahead of next year’s race. Risk It looks a real contender, but it could be Patriot Spirit who ends up taking home the prize.

Locust Grove Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and a sixteenth, dirt, open to fillies & mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $400,000

Chad Brown’s Search Results is likely to start this year’s Locust Grove Stakes as the favorite. Highly tried, she has been unlucky in some huge races where only the likes of Malathaat and Clairiere have pipped her to some big prizes. Despite not getting her head in front, she is a classy performer and should produce a big performance back in these slightly calmer waters.

Brad Cox won this race in 2021 and will be hoping to win this contest for a second time with A Mo Reay. She kicked off her 2023 in superb style when winning the Beholder Mile Stakes. Her fourth-place finish in the La Troienne Stakes last time out shouldn’t be dismissed and she should certainly be in the picture here.

When Pauline’s Pearl was last seen, she was convincingly winning the 2023 Fleur De Lis Stakes. A former Grade 1 winner, she has won two of her last four starts and is clearly thriving. She is a real danger to all in the field.

Ignacio Correas is bidding to become the first trainer to win this race for the second time and saddles Le Da Vida. A convincing winner of the 2023 Lady Jacqueline Stakes, she couldn’t quite match that performance in the 2023 Molly Pitcher Stakes. Clearly talented, she could be a player at a decent price.

Todd Pletcher will be hopeful of a super Saturday and sends Falconet into this race. A winner of two of her last three starts, she beat the reopposing Hidden Connection last time out in the 2023 Groupie Doll Stakes. A winner by just over a length, her connections will be hopeful of another bold showing.

Soul of an Angel, Misty Veil, Fannie and Freddie, Music Street and Royal Take Charge round out the field.

Locust Grove Stakes Odds & Racing Prediction

Arguably the toughest race of the day to call, Search Results has a losing run to overcome but has the classiest form in the race. Back in this grade, she should be a major contender. If she fails to fire, Pauline’s Pearl could pick up the pieces.

Open Mind Stakes

6 furlongs, dirt, open to fillies & mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $300,000

A field of six are due to compete for this year’s Open Mind Stakes. Set to start as the overwhelming favorite is Wicked Halo.

A winner of two of her last four starts, only Goodnight Olive denied her in the 2023 Bed O’Roses Stakes. She easily boasts the best form in the contest and could win this race easily.

Yuugiri will be hoping to pick up the pieces if Wicked Halo fails to fire. Twice a Stakes winner this season, she disappointed when last seen in the 2023 Satin and Lace Stakes and arrives at this contest with plenty to prove and class to make up on the favorite.

Fire on Time is one of the oldest horses in the field but finished well behind Yuugiri when last seen in the 2023 Saylorville Stakes. Nowhere near the class of Wicked Halo, she is most likely competing for minor honors.

Completing this year’s lineup are the trio More Than Vows, Ten Rings and Sharp Hero. All look like they have plenty to find if they are to play any serious part in the race.

Open Mind Stakes Odds & Racing Pick

With just six runners in this year’s Open Mind Stakes, it’s hard to look beyond Wicked Halo. Her connections will be hoping to use this race as a steppingstone for bigger races to come, and she should have far too much ability for all her rivals here.
