Practical made his move taking Los Alamitos Futurity 2022

The Road to the Kentucky Derby took an unexpected turn at Los Alamitos on Saturday, when Practical Move upset the strongly fancied Bob Baffert trio with a dominant display in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity. Twenty-four hours later, chalk players caught a break when the odds-on Giver Not A Taker was a game winner of the ungraded King Glorious.

Practical makes his move

Obvious isn’t always right. Bob Baffert appeared to have a lock on the Los Alamitos Futurity, historically and on the day, but his three arrows missed the target as Practical Move sprang an upset and harvested ten ‘Road to the Kentucky Derby’ points in the process.

The 10-1 fourth-choice made his stakes breakthrough in style under Ramon Vazquez, following Carmel Road and 2-5 favourite Arabian Lion until moving forward around the turn, where the odds-on shot quickly emptied out. Practical Move found a perfect trip on the rail and was always too strong for the persistent Carmel Road down the long Los Alamitos stretch, rolling home by three and a quarter lengths in a time of 1:41 and three-fifths.

Fort Bragg kept on at one pace for third, four and a quarter lengths further back, while Arabian Lion stopped to nothing and trailed in a hugely disappointing last of the five runners.

“It was just a matter of whether he was able to get the distance today,” said trainer Tim Yakteen. “He ran dynamite and I think he validated himself as a route horse there.”

Practical Move, now two-for-five and never off the board, is booked for a layoff now. He is a solid candidate for the Kentucky Derby and is likely to be pointed towards the G2 San Felipe at Santa Anita on March 4 and the G1 Santa Anita Derby on April 8, making his way towards Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.

Giver takes it

A dramatic race for the King Glorious at Los Alamitos on Sunday resulted in a narrow victory for Giver Not A Taker, who justified 3-5 odds after a stirring stretch duel with longshot Crypto Ride.

The race changed in sensational fashion when early leader Please Focus unseated Mario Gutierrez at the beginning of the back stretch after seeming to take a false step; horse and jockey returned safe and sound.

As the leaders fanned out at the top of the lane it was 47-1 poke Crypto Ride who took command down the centre of the track, and he looked the winner until Giver Not A Taker rallied bravely on the rail under Flavien Prat to run him down in the last four strides, getting home by a head. There were five lengths back to Geezer in third; the stopwatch showed 1:38 and one-fifth.

This was the second victory in state-bred stakes company for the Peter Miller-trained Giver Not A Taker, who is now three-for-five and runs in the lime green and royal blue silks associated with champion sprinter Jackie’s Warrior.
