Prix Morny & Prix Jean Romanet Odds and Picks

Saturday sees a high-quality card at Deauville on Sunday, where there are four graded races, and it’s the top class Grade 1’s we are featuring. The Grade 1 Prix Morny for two-year-olds will see the Aidan O’Brien River Tiber look to enhance his glowing reputation and make it four in a row having won the Grade 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Breeders Cup Odds

The older horses (fillies and mares) will contest the Grade 1 Prix Jean Romanet over a mile and a quarter with the George Boughey-trained Via Sistina the short-price chalk.

Prix Jean Romanet

Grade 1 – Purse $272,000 – 1 mile 1 furlong 207 yards – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Will Via Sistina prove the star of the show at Deauville on Sunday?

A competitive Grade 1 and the George Boughey trained Via Sistina is the chalk.

She was a beaten favorite in the Grade 1 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket last month, beaten by the top-class Nashwa, but she was badly placed in the run and did a lot of work to close and get into contention.

That was over a mile and her graded stakes winning form has been over this mile-and-a-quarter distance, so there is plenty of upside today, and she will be a tough foe for this bunch.

She won the Grade 2 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket before a career best to take out the Grade 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh last month, where another of today’s foes Above The Curve was over three lengths back in the third spot.

Above the Curve is a very good racehorse in her own right but will surely have her work cut out to hit the winner’s circle, and bigger dangers are lurking from the home team.

MQSE De Sevigne is the main French hope today, and she is a highly consistent mare having hit the board in all four starts this season, including when winning the Grade 1 Prix Rothschild Stakes last time here at Deauville over a mile.

She had Rogue Millenium some six lengths back that day and the form is rock solid, with that rival having previously won the Grade 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot

Her other races were all place finishes and included a runner-up spot in the Grade 2 Prix Corrida Stakes in May, where she was a couple of lengths adrift of Above The Curve.

These three look the strongest in this field with proven graded stakes form.

However, if we are to see a shock, then it could come from another British raider in One For Bobby

The Frankel Filly has taken a step forward since stretching out to this distance and won the Listed Nottinghamshire Oaks Stakes in May before a step up the class ladder to finish third in the Grade 3 Hoppings Fillies Stakes where she was just a couple of lengths behind Al Husn and Nashwa, who have both gone on to win since.

There is no doubt that Via Sistina has ideal conditions and the best form on the card. She should have no problem hitting the board but is short odds on the morning line.

At a bit more value, ONE FOR BOBBY looks the play as an across-the-board shot, and she gets a narrow vote.

Both Above The Curve and MQSE De Sevigne should be battling for a slice underneath.

Prix Morny

Grade 1 – Purse $380,000 – 5 furlongs 212 yards – Turf – 2-Year-Olds

Can River Tiber remain unbeaten and prove himself the best European two-year-old this season?

River Tiber came with a tall reputation when he made his debut back in April at Naas Racecourse and the hype was well deserved as he was sent off the chalk on the boards and duly won geared down by ten lengths.

It was no surprise to see him follow up on the second attempt but his win last time in the Grade 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June showed him a colt with top-class ability.

In that event, he was well positioned but failed to quicken as well as the runner-up in the final furlong, and it was only very late that he got up to win under the wire by a neck.

However, that form has been given a huge boost by the third horse Bucanero Fuerte who ran away with the Grade 1 Phoenix Stakes last weekend with a speed rating of 111.

That shows just how well River Tiber has performed so far in those three wins.

His biggest danger looks to come from the only filly in the race, Ramatuelle who has won three of her four starts including the Grade 3 Prix du Bois Longines – Fonds Europeen de l’Elevage Stakes in June, before following up when stepping up the class ladder to take the Grade 2 Prix Robert Papin Stakes at Chantilly.

She has a speed rating of 106 and getting 3 lbs from River Tiber makes it a close match-up.

But this is no two-horse race, and Jasour and Elite Status have strong chances.

Jasour was a convincing winner of the Grade 2 July Stakes last month where he traveled strongly and widened from the furlong marker to win by two lengths, beating some very highly touted two-year-olds.

Elite Status is three from four having finished third in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes before winning here at Deauville last time, taking the Grade 3 Prix De Cabourg Stakes in fine style.

No doubt that Ramatuelle is a danger to the chalk getting 3 lbs allowance and she looks sure to hit the board.

However, a strong vote goes to RIVER TIBER after his form was given a huge boost by the win of Bucanero Fuerte in last week’s Phoenix Stakes.

Both Jasour and Elite Status look sure to run well and can be fighting for a slice of this huge purse.
