Rancho Bernardo H Odds, Field & Betting Pick

This Sunday at Del Mar is headlined by this year’s renewal of the Rancho Bernardo H. Here is everything you need to know.

Rancho Bernardo H

Grade 3, 6 and a half furlongs, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool $150,000

This year’s renewal of the Rancho Bernardo Handicap looks set for a small field with just six runners declared. Although we have a small field for the race it is packed with quality and intrigue.

The likely favourite for the race is expected to be Edgeway. A five year old, she is trained by John Sadler and will be ridden by Juan Hernandez. She has only had two runs this year but has been a previous winner at this level. Off the track since May, she found the Grade 1 Distaff Stakes far too competitive and is looking to bounce back in these calmer waters. The winner of this race last year, she won last year’s race easily and will be hoping to repeat the feat once again.

Close in the betting will be the Todd Fincher trained Slammed. Based out of New Mexico, Slammed has been a prolific winner, winning eight of her ten career starts, which included a comfortable allowance victory last time out at Del Mar. This will be her biggest test to date, but she has to be a horse taken very seriously here.

Rounding off the top three in the betting is likely to be the Bob Baffert trained Private Mission. Drawn on the outside and ridden by the legendary Mike Smith, Private Mission returns to a sprint distance following a crack over further.

A versatile horse, her best results have come over further distances. Her last start at this trip came in the Grade 3 Las Flores Stakes which was won by Edgeway. It will be interesting to see whether she can reverse that form here.

Looking to give the top three in the market a scare will be the Mark Glatt trained Dance to the Music. An interesting runner, she has good form at the track after finishing second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last season. She also warmed up for this race with a second place finish in the Grade 3 Desert Stormer and will be six pounds lighter than likely favourite Edgeway. At a price she could be the value play of the race.

Likely to fill the two outsider spots are the pair of  Cover Version and Empire House.

Cover Version is winless in five and despite being highly tried at this level is yet to place at this grade. Likely to sit off the pace, she will look to come late and hope to pick up the pieces if the pace collapses.

Empire House has been drawn inside but will likely have a tough time trying to hold onto the rail. She does enter the race in good form having been a winner last time out in the California Governor’s Cup but like Cover Version is looking to place at this level for the first time in her career.

Rancho Bernardo H Betting Pick

despite there being dangers all around, the sensible play might be Edgeway. A winner of this race before, her form has a solid look about it. Slammed is an intriguing runner and could be the main danger to the selection.
