A few days ago, we made some betting predictions about the Indiana Oaks and the Indiana Derby. Those races have now been run, so let’s see how those predictions went.
Mr. Wireless is the Big Winner at the Indiana Derby
In our prediction article, we mentioned that Fulsome looked good for the win at the Indiana Derby and that Mr. Wireless was the only one capable of challenging him. As it happens, we were half right, because Mr. Wireless took the win in the end.
Ridden by Ramon Vazquez, Mr. Wireless had a bit of a bumpy start before settling down quickly and stalking the frontrunner, W W Crazy. Through fractions of 24.16 and 48.31, Mr. Wireless remained in touch and Fulsome seemed poised to threaten.
As the race progressed and the pack set a rapid pace over fast ground—moving through fractions of 1:12.41 and 1:36.61—the frontrunner faded and Mr. Wireless took control, followed by Sermononthemount.
Fulsome made a move but failed to mount a proper challenge while Starrininmydreams was too far back to make an impact. Mr. Wireless broke clear late on and set a fast 1:42.84 race time, roughly 1 ½ seconds off the race record, which was set a decade ago (almost to the day) by Jardim.
The impressive Bret Calhoun trainee was 3 ¾ lengths clear of Sermononthemount at the wire while the second-place runner was 1 ¾ lengths ahead of Fulsome.
- Mr. Wireless – 7/2
- Sermononthemount – 17/1
- Fulsome – 2/5
Fast Finishing Soothsay Wins the Indiana Oaks Ahead of Long Shot
Our prediction for the Indiana Oaks was Marion Francis, a 12/1 shot that we felt had a great chance to finish in the top three. We took a risk and it didn’t pay off, but we were close. In fact, there was only a neck in it!
The Indiana Oaks was incredibly close in the end and it could have gone any other way on another day.
In the end, it was Soothsay who claimed the winner’s share of the $200,000 prize money.
It wasn’t a great start for the filly owned by Raydelz Stable and trained by Richard Mandella. She broke into the air, and her jockey, Flavien Prat, struggled to settle her down.
Lovely Ride took the lead as the field set fractional times of 24.71 and 48.88, with Soothsay making her move as a 1:12.44 time was set at the three-quarter point.
The 39/1 long shot Moon Swag made her move into the final straight and managed to nudge to the front of the pack, but Soothsay chased her down and beat her by a neck. Moon Swag was just a head in front of Lady Aces in third, who put in a good effort but was outpaced at the wire.
As for our prediction Marion Francis, she finished a neck behind Lady Aces and a clear four lengths ahead of the fading frontrunner Lovely Ride.
A mere length separated the four highest finishers, proving just how tough this race was.
- Soothsay – 2/1
- Moon Swag – 39/1
- Lady Aces – 10/1
