2023 Hampton Court Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $201,000 – 1 mile 1 furlong 212 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

A very open race with the Aiden O’Brien trained Drumroll the chalk on 9/2. He broke the maiden tag the first time at Navan before stepping up the class ladder to finish second in the Tetrarch Stakes behind his barn buddy Paddington who won the St James Palace Stakes here on Tuesday.

Drumroll took another step forward by winning the Grade 3 Gallinule Stakes in the steward’s room. He was awarded the race after being bumped and carried wide inside the final furlong. He’ll aim to stalk the pace in this big field.

Plenty of rivals taking him on and Waipiro 12/1 who finished sixth in the Grade 1 Derby Stakes looks an interesting rival taking a cut back in distance. He tried to go gate to wire in the Grade 3 Lingfield Derby trial over two furlongs further but was run down late. His previous maiden breaker was a gate-to-wire performance and he could be very dangerous on the speed.

Another with classic form is the filly Caernarfon 9/1 who was fourth in the Grade 1 1000 Guineas and followed that with an even better effort to finish third in the Grade 1 Oaks Stakes. She is a mid-pack stalker, gets a fillies weight allowance, and has a strong chance here.

The Gosden/Dettori combo has the class dropper Epictetus 5/1 who broke the maiden first time as a two-year-old and won his first three-year-old start when taking the Listed Blue Riband Trial Stakes at Epsom. He has since finished a creditable fifth in the Grade 2 Dante Stakes at York and an even better effort in the Grade 1 Prix Do Jockey Club in France. Plenty of upside to this class drops today.

Looking at some potential longshots that could get involved, and both Bolster 10/1 and Tony Montana 28/1 have chances of hitting the board.

Bolster broke the maiden tag at Leicester in October and showed he had trained when opening his seasonal account in a Novice Stakes at Windsor. This will require a jolt of improvement but his win last time was very impressive and he should be on the radar4 for exotics players.

We don’t often see a maiden in this grade but Tony Montana is from the powerful Gosden barn and commands respect. He was second on debut in a strong-looking Novice Stakes race in September, and although he was slightly disappointing when finishing third on his three-year-old debut, he should not be taken lightly for his powerful barn.

Hampton Court Stakes Odds & Prediction

A tough puzzle to solve and Drumroll has to be of interest after his form was franked earlier in the week by Paddington. However, he comes up against some very tough rivals here so may have to settle for a spot on the board.

The selection has to be CAERNARFON who has run well in two English Classics and the drop down in distance and the fillies’ weight allowance give plenty of upside.

Waipiro should make a bold bid to go gate to wire and he can hit the board.

2023 Ribblesdale Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $296,500 – 1 mile 3 furlongs 211 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

A huge field of nineteen go to the gate for this nearly $300,000 purse and yet we have odds on chalk in Al Asifah 10/11.

She has only run twice and created a big impression when breaking the maiden tag the first time at Haydock just over a month ago, and John and Thady Gosden wasted no time in stepping her up the class ladder to contest the Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies Stakes at Goodwood.

Expectations were high as she was sent off at 4/7 on the boards but what we saw must have made even Gosden’s draw drop. She came to the leaders at the 2-furlong pole in hand and when Jim Crowley pressed the button, she widened by 8 lengths in the blink of an eye. It was electric and she won in hand heavily eased by just over six lengths.

Looking at rivals to maybe give her a race, and Infinite Cosmos 6/1 is one filly who could make a race of things. She broke the maiden tag on her second start (first as three year old) and was then stepped up the class ladder to contest the Grade 3 Musidora Stakes where she finished third but came up against the subsequent Grade 1 Oaks winner Soul Sister. That is probably the best piece of form in this race and she is another slow burner from the Stoute barn who will surely appreciate the stretch-out in distance.

Other well-fancied rivals include Warm Heart 12/1 and Bluestocking 4/1 who met last time in the Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial Stakes at Newbury. There was only a head between the pair and both look sure to appreciate the stretch-out in distance.

It was Bluestocking’s second career start and Warm Heart’s fourth, so, likely, Bluestocking may well get the better of that duel this time around.

Looking at the bigger priced runners and it’s difficult to make a case for many of these but one that still looks unexposed and could make a bit to grab a slice underneath is the Irish raider Village Voice 22/1.

She broke the maiden first time at Thurles Racecourse and then stepped up the class ladder to take in the Grade 3 Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown where she finished third of the six runners over nine furlongs. She was closing late, so today’s stretch-out looks to give plenty of upside and she continued her progression by winning the Listed Salsabil stakes at Navan on her first start as a three-year-old.

Ribblesdale Stakes Odds & Prediction

Al Asifah looks to be a very exciting prospect and if coming here in the same form as Goodwood, she’ll be very tough to beat. We could be looking at a superstar.

However, she needs to prove she can stay and handle this much different track and the vote goes to INFINITE COSMOS who will love the stretch-out and has the best piece of form on the card.

Bluestocking and Village Voice are tough foes and can be battling for a slice underneath.
