Robert B. Lewis Stakes & Holy Bull Stakes Recaps

Kentucky Derby pointers were front and center on Saturday, with Rocket Can blasting into the reckoning when making his stakes breakthrough in the G3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. On the other side of the country at Santa Anita, Newgate also claimed his first stakes win in the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, but he is still some way down the pecking order at Bob Baffert’s barn.

Rocket takes off in style

Last Saturday, he won the Pegasus World Cup. This Saturday, it was the Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. Bill Mott is living for the weekend at the moment, claiming a headline Kentucky Derby prep with Rocket Can, who saw off longshot barnmate Shadow Dragon by three-quarters of a length to claim 20 RTKD points and a place in the big-race conversation.

The 5-2 second-choice surged to the lead around the turn under Junior Alvarado and kept on strongly through the stretch to turn back the threat of his barnmate, who had been last in the early stages. Rank outsider West Coast Cowboy was always on the scene and dug in well for third, two, and a quarter length further back. The favorite Cyclone Mischief trailed in a weary seventh.

Rocket Can, who was making his stakes debut, will stay at Gulfstream for either the G2 Fountain of Youth on March 4 or the G1 Florida Derby on April 1. He was trimmed to +5000 for the Kentucky Derby on the Jazz future book, with Shadow Dragon cut to +7500. Arabian Knight remains the +700 favorite.

Newgate nails first-stakes win

The tote board had it spot on in the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita on Saturday when even-money favorite Newgate outfought Hard To Figure in a race in which Bob Baffert trained all four runners. Therefore no RTKD points were made available.

It was fifth time lucky at Graded level for Newgate, partnered by retirement-lap all-time-great Frankie Dettori, who determinedly ran down longshot Hard To Figure to grab the dollars by a neck. Worcester, still a maiden, was a length and three-quarters away in third and second-choice Arabian Lion, running another hugely disappointing race, was last of the four and surely exiting the Derby trail in the process.

Newgate was back in the winner’s circle for the first time since scoring on debut in July but will have to leave Baffert’s barn for a new trainer by the end of the month if he is to become eligible for the Kentucky Derby. He is now +3500 for the first leg of the Triple Crown on the Jazz future book, ranked sixth among current Baffert trainees, with Hard To Figure at +6000.
