San Antonio Stakes, Mathis Mile & San Gabriel Review

Monday’s card at Santa Anita saw three fantastic Grade 2 races, the Mathis Mile, San Gabriel Stakes and the San Antonio Stakes. Here we recap the best of the action.

San Antonio Stakes

Grade 2, 1 / 16 mile, dirt, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool $200,000

  1. Country Grammer -163
  2. Stiletto Boy +550
  3. Heywoods Beach +900

Arguably the race of the day on Monday’s card at Santa Anita came in this year’s renewal of the San Antonio Stakes.

The betting for the race was dominated by the Bob Baffert-trained Country Grammer who was looking to return to the winner’s circle for the first time in four attempts.

Breaking well from the gate, Country Grammer’s jockey Frankie Dettori always had his charge up with the pace.

Heading towards the final turn of the race it was Mike Smith and Stiletto Boy who led the field but Country Grammer was always travelling smoothly.

With the turn approaching, Dettori made his move and effortlessly pushed Country Grammer to the front. Rounding the corner in the lead, Dettori pressed the ‘GO button’ and Country Grammer quickly put the race to bed, easily streaking clear of the rest of the field.

Stiletto Boy ran a cracker of a race to hold onto second place with Heywoods Beach making his move late to secure third place.

For Country Grammer, the race couldn’t have panned out better and attentions now turn to the Middle East with both the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup looking like attainable targets.

Mathis Mile

Grade 2, 1 mile, turf, open to horses aged three. Total prize pool $200,000

  1. One More Bid +1200
  2. Balnikhov +225
  3. Sumter +350

The opening race of Monday’s Santa Anita came in the form of the Mathis Mile and it was certainly a race that didn’t disappoint.

The betting for the race was dominated by the Mark Glatt–trained Im A Gambler who was making his first American start following a successful career in Europe and the Phil D’Amato- trained Balnikov who was looking to land his second successive graded contest.

Both would go on to play a prominent part in the race but it would be the Richard Mandella-trained Sumter who would make this race interesting.

Bouncing out of the starting stalls, Sumter bagged the inside rail and was more than happy to lead the rest of the field. Holding his position as the field approached the final turn, it was clear that this was going to be a contest between Sumter, Balnikhov, One More Bid and Im A Gambler.

As the four horses hit the home straight they were panned across the track with Sumter still proving tough and game out in front. It looked like Sumter would be able to hold onto a thrilling victory but Balnikhov and One More Bid were piling on the pressure.

With just 100 yards to go there was still nothing to separate the front three, but it was the outsider of the field One More Bid who was able to find something extra.

Running in between Sumter and Balnikhov, One More Bid and jockey Ramon Vasquez found a gap and fully exploited it. With Sumter fading, Balnikhov made one final lunge for victory, but it would prove to be a case of too little too late as One More Bid would hold on for the biggest win of his career.

Balnikhov would finish second with Sumter able to hold off Im A Gambler to secure third.

San Gabriel Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile 1 furlong, turf, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool $200,000

  1. Dicey Mo Chara +500
  2. Flashiest +2500
  3. Masteroffoxhounds +110

Seven horses lined up for this year’s renewal of the San Gabriel Stakes with the Phil D’Amato trainer Masteroffoxhounds the heavy favourite for the contest.

Dicey Mo Chara was hoping to exact revenge following a narrow defeat in the John Henry Stakes where he lost by just a neck to Masteroffoxhounds and looked to be the value angle of the contest.

The early knockings of this year’s renewal would turn out to be fairly uneventful with the outsider of the field Rip City happy to pull the rest of the field along.

With half a mile left to run, Mike Smith and Masteroffoxhounds wanted to inject some pace and made their move, sweeping through from the middle of the pack to lead.

Bob and Jackie covered every move from the favourite and  as they approached the final turn was matching strides with the much-fancied horse.

With the top two looking to separate themselves from the rest of the field, the eye was drawn to the inside rail where Juan Hernandez and Dicey Mo Chara were making their move, they were joined on the wide outside by Tyler Gafflione and Flashiest.

Hitting the home straight it was clear that both Masteroffoxhounds and Bob And Jackie had done too much too early and both quickly retreated backwards.

This was a race that was going to be decided by Dicey Mo Chara and Flashiest with the pair set to battle it out inside the final furlong.

It was Dicey Mo Chara who had the first run on the field and this slender lead would prove to be decisive, as despite Flashiest’s best efforts he couldn’t quite overhaul Dicey Mo Chara’s lead.

Holding on gamely, Dicey Mo Chara’s victory was the biggest of his career to date.

With the rest of the closing pack fading it was Masteroffoxhounds who would hold onto third with the unlucky Prince Abama who was denied racing room on several occasions finishing fourth.
