San Juan Capistrano Stakes Odds & Betting Picks

Six horses are due to head down to post for this year’s San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita. A Grade 3 turf race contested over a distance of 1 mile and three quarters, favorite for the race looks set to be the Mike McCarthy trained Offlee Naughty.

Seeking a third successive graded victory, he will be looking to back up his win last time out in the San Luis Rey Stakes.

San Juan Capistrano

Grade 3, one mile and three quarters, turf. Open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool $100,000

A winner of his last three races, Offlee Naughty for Mike McCarthy is hoping to win his third graded race in succession.

A cosy winner last time out in the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes, although he only won by a length, the margin of victory was far more comfortable than it looked. He looks primed for a yet another big run.

One of Offlee Naughty’s main rivals looks to be his stablemate Duvet Day.

Formerly trained in Ireland by leading trainer Jessica Harrington, she made the move Stateside in 2021 but has found wins hard to come by. Her best performance came back in January when a good winner of the 2023 Astra Stakes. She backed that solid run up with a good second place in the 2023 Santa Barbara Stakes and looks one of the likeliest contenders here.

Another hoping  to cause Offlee Naughty problems is the Richard Mandella trained Planetario. A winner of two Grade 1s in his native Brazil, the San Luis Rey was his first run in the States and it was certainly full of promise. Finishing second, he was slightly hampered and with a bit more luck in running could have finished on top.

With improvement hopefully on the cards he will be looking to turn the tables on his rival.

Opry is another who brings in form from the San Luis Rey Stakes. Only able to finish in 4th, he is now winless in his last three starts and is relatively unproven at this level.

Finishing a place behind Opry in the San Luis Rey Stakes was the Tim McCanna trained Rimprotector. His fifth place finish was his first attempt at graded level and he looks another who has plenty to prove.

Rounding out the six runner field is the Reed Saldana trained Birth of Cool. Yet to run in this type of company he heads into the race following a success last time out in allowance company. Relatively exposed it would be a shock if he were to pull off the upset on his graded debut.

San Juan Capistrano Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

Despite only six runners heading down to post for this year’s San Juan Capistrano Stakes, it seems that only a select few horses will be able to compete at the top end of the field. Offlee Naughty will rightfully start as the favorite and his last few runs suggest that he has the best form heading into the contest. His win in the San Luis Rey was convincing and he should back that performance up here.
