San Vicente Stakes 2023: Easy as 1-2-3 for Baffert

It all went according to plan in the G2 San Vicente Stakes 2023 at Santa Anita on Sunday, with the experienced Havnameltdown giving trainer Bob Baffert his 12th success in the race and stamping himself as a very promising sprinter for the coming year.

Easy as 1-2-3 for Baffert: As widely and easily predicted, Bob Baffert nailed the trifecta in the San Vicente at Santa Anita on Sunday, with Havnameltdown leading home barnmates Faustin and Fort Warren. The only reason Baffert didn’t pull down the superfecta was the late scratch of his fourth contender Gilmore.

Havnameltdown was the form horse against promising maiden winners and laid down the law from the gate, the slight favourite at even-money breaking on top under Juan Hernandez and never being headed thereafter. He had plenty in reserve when fellow even-money shot Faustin came at him late and made it home by a length and a half, with eight and three-quarter lengths back to Fort Warren, who made no show whatsoever.

“I think Havnameltdown is a top-class sprinter,” said Baffert, winning his 12th San Vicente. “He’s been training really well, he’s had the experience and he’s fast.”

This took Havnameltdown’s record to four-for-five, adding to a pair of G3 wins with his only defeat coming in the G1 Del Mar Futurity. He will compete at six and seven furlongs now, while Faustin will attempt to stretch out and join the Kentucky Derby trail.
