Santa Margarita Stakes & Honeymoon Stakes Odds and Picks

While most of the racing world will have their eyes fixed on this year’s Belmont Stakes, there are two top class races from the west coast this Saturday, as Santa Anita hosts the G2 Santa Margarita Stakes and G3 Honeymoon Stakes.

A field of five are due to head to post for this year’s Santa Margarita with the Bob Baffert trained Adare Manor the very heavy favorite for victory following her dominant win in the 2023 Santa Maria Stakes when last seen.

In this year’s Honeymoon Stakes, Phil D’Amato looks to have a strong hand with both Paris Secret and Comanche Country heading the betting. It’s Paris Secret who is likely to shade favoritism following her victory last time out in the Providencia Stakes, although Selenaia for Jonathan Thomas could push her all the way.

Santa Margarita Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile and an eighth, dirt, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $200,000

One of the bankers of this Saturday’s card at Santa Anita looks set to be the Bob Baffert trained Adare Manor who is the overwhelming favorite for this year’s Santa Margarita Stakes.

An easy winner of the 2023 Santa Maria Stakes, her win came from off the front, and she looked a horse going places. Untroubled in that race, she will be looking to win this race in a similar fashion. A winner of her last two starts, look for her to dictate the fractions and be hard to pass.

Phil D’Amato is hoping to have a successful Saturday and his charge Desert Dawn looks the most likely to chase Adare Manor down. Without a victory in her last six starts, she has raced in some highly competitive races and has placed form at a graded level. One of her greatest wins came in the 2022 Santa Anita Oaks where she beat Adare Manor. Since that race the two horses have been trending in different directions and Desert Dawn looks to have a tough time on her hands if she is going to come out on top.

Kirstenbosch for John Sadler is likely to round out the top three in the betting and she heads into the contest having placed third in the Santa Maria Stakes last time out. She finished some way behind Adare Manor in that race and looks like she will have to produce a career best if she is to those reverse those places.

Rounding out the five-runner field are Smoothlikebuttah and Tiz a Macho Girl. Both look like they will be battling it out for the minor places and don’t look to be in the class of those at the top of the market.

Santa Margarita Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

Adare Manor’s easy victory in the Santa Maria Stakes looks to have set her up nicely for this contest. Likely to hit the front early, she will look to dictate the fractions and run the race on her terms. Whilst Desert Dawn has beaten her in the past, Adare Manor now looks like a much better horse and is likely to take all the beating.

Honeymoon Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and an eighth, turf, open to three-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: $100,000

Having won this race back in 2021, Phil D’Amato looks to have a great chance of winning this race once again and saddles two strong contenders in Paris Secret and Comanche Country.

The likely favorite for the race is Paris Secret. Lightly raced, this will be just the fourth start of her career, but she heads into the contest in fine form having won last time out in the Providence Stakes. Still looking green, she was able to power home in the final furlong and did just enough to prevail. With improvement still on the cards she is likely to rate a major danger to all.

Looking to cause Paris Secret some troubles will be her stablemate Comanche Country. A winner of the 2022 Surfer Girl Stakes, her sights have been lowered following heavy defeats in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Fillies & Mares Turf and 2023 Edgewood Stakes.

Despite her defeats she easily boasts the best form in the field but could prove vulnerable to an improver.

Selenaia for Jonathan Thomas rounds out the top three in the pre-race betting and heads into the race in great form having won both of her last two starts. Whilst both of those wins have come at a lower level, her win last time out was impressive and she looks more than ready for this jump in class.

If looking to take on those at the top of the market, then the George Papaprodromou trained Pleasant Wave could be the horse to back. Winless in three, she did finish second to Paris Secret in the Providence Stakes last time out and that performance was one of the best of her career. Losing by just one length, her connections will be hopeful of overturning that result here, and could be worth a look.

Bob Baffert has long been regarded as the King of Californian racing and in this year’s Honeymoon Stakes he saddles Fast and Shiny. A winner of two of her last three starts, she finished well behind Comanche Country in last year’s Surfer Girl Stakes. Although she has improved since then, she will need to produce a solid performance to trouble those at the top of the betting.

Broadway Girls, Tea N Conversation and Una Palabra are the likely long shots of the race.

Honeymoon Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

It would be a surprise if either of the Phil D’Amato trained horses didn’t play a major part in proceedings in this year’s Honeymoon Stakes. Comanche Country can boast some decent form but is clearly exposed. Paris Secret looks to be the more progressive horse, and whilst the margin of her victory in the Providence Stakes was narrow, she looks to be the one to back.
