Saranac Stakes Odds & Racing Picks

Meet-leading trainer Chad Brown has his fingerprints all over the G3 Saranac Stakes, the feature at Saratoga on Friday, with G2 winner Carl Spackler and stakes debutant Activist Investing both on the upgrade and hunting a second success at the Spa this summer.

G3, $175,000, 1m 1/16 turf, 3yo, 2.52pm ET

Chad Brown does not yet have the meet title wrapped up but could take a big step towards his goal in Friday’s main event at Saratoga, as he has an iron grip on the Saranac with the two leading contenders – if the race stays on the lawn.

Brown’s best chance lies with Carl Spackler (4-5), the only Graded-stakes winner in the field, who earned that singularity with an impressive victory in the 2023 G2 Hall of Fame here over a mile. He came wide on the turn but produced a powerful stretch run and was well on top at the wire, hand-ridden to score by two and a quarter lengths.

That was his first start for three months and he is entitled to move up, with that level of success giving him a clear class edge on the opposition. His second-string barnmate Activist Investing (7-2) is taking a typical Brown path by going straight into Graded stakes off an allowance win, by a comfortable length and a quarter here over a mile-eighth.

He showed no sign of rust despite coming off a ten-month layoff and improvement is highly likely, although with only a 19-day turnaround after such a long break, there is the possibility of a bounce.

Lost Ark (8-1) is set to make his debut on the weeds, and will certainly not be disadvantaged if the race comes off the turf. He walked off the track in the 2022 G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and did not return until June, when he was a dominant winner of a Monmouth Park allowance over a mile-sixteenth.

He did not look at home back at stakes level next time when fourth here over a mile-eighth, and bettors are counting on the surface switch making a difference.

Recent British import Yacowlef (12-1) makes his Stateside and stakes debut off the back of a career-best in a seven-furlong handicap at Goodwood, when he did all his best work late to steal second place at the line. The extra yardage could suit, while fellow stakes debutant Taking Candy (8-1) nailed an allowance by a nose – by a pixel, more like – over course and distance last time, but it looked very hard work and he will need more here.

Both Freedom Trail (10-1), a well-beaten third in a Delaware Park stakes over a mile-eighth on his most recent start, and Mendelssohns March (8-1), whose sixth-place at 65-1 in the G1 Belmont Derby over ten furlongs almost certainly flatters his ability, have failed to make it pay at this sort of level in 2023 and would benefit from an easier spot. Gilmore won at the Spa on Wednesday and will not run here.

G2 winner CARL SPACKLER can make his class edge tell against rivals who all have something – surface switch, class rise, moderate recent form – to prove.
