Saratoga is here again – and the upmarket meet in upstate New York gets under way on Thursday with the Schuylerville, a typical summer two-year-old contest that leaves bettors shooting in the dark regarding the potential for improvement of these very inexperienced horses.

It’s all about what they can do next, not what they’ve already done, and big-track form and top-rank trainers are the best way into a race in which nine of the 11 runners won last time out.

Both those factors come together in Wine On Tap (5-2), who was untroubled to cruise in by three lengths on debut at Belmont Park for trainer Todd Pletcher, who has won the Schuylerville a joint-record six times. The morning-line is no more than an educated guess here, but given those attributes Wine On Tap probably deserves to be favourite.

Wayne Lukas has also trained six Schuylerville Stakes winners and sends Saratoga Secret (4-1), who will probably be an underlay on her name alone. She also won by three lengths on debut, strolling in professional style at Ellis Park.

The only previous stakes winner here is Closing Act (10-1), two-for-two after that victory at Belmont when she drew off to beat debut winner Union Suit (20-1) by an easy three and a quarter lengths. Her extra experience is a positive but it may be wise not to place too much faith in such minor stakes form.

Belmont was also the stage for Status Seeker (12-1), who got it right first time when finishing off well to win by a half-length, and the market may be slightly underestimating this big-track form.

Robert Reid loads both barrels and the market says his best shot is with Carmelina (5-1), who led pretty much every step of the way on debut, romping by five and three-quarter lengths at Parx. Her barnmate Kiss For Luck (30-1) also won at Parx on debut over the same four and a half furlongs, but was less impressive when getting the job done by a length and three-quarters, and the board horses were much further behind Carmelina next time out.

Sugar Treat (6-1) switches to the main track after winning on debut on the synthetic surface at Gulfstream Park, and unlike many here she had to fight to win, getting up late to score by a half-length. That racecraft will help her, but it’s not obvious what Dancing Diana (6-1) learned when going gate-to-wire on debut at Delaware Park against just three rivals. The margin of seven and a half lengths takes the eye, but it was likely a very weak race.

Monmouth Park debut winner Mila Junes (30-1) was 54-1 when scoring by a half-length in a biggish field and that doesn’t inspire confidence in the standard of that contest; Becky’s Joker (15-1) makes her debut today.

This type of race is always a minefield. Big-track, big-trainer form points to WINE ON TAP, who impressed on debut and is likely to improve considerably.
