Selene Stakes & Marine Stakes Odds and Picks

Completing Saturday’s Canada Day card at Woodbine are two Grade 3 contests the Selene Stakes and Marine.

A race for three-year-old fillies, ten horses will head to post for this year’s renewal of the Selene Stakes. Leading the betting is the Mark Casse trained Wonder Wheel who heads into the race without a victory in her last three races. Last seen when finishing ninth in the Kentucky Oaks field, she still has the best form in the book and looks to be the one to beat having won the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Breeders Cup Odds

A field of eight will head down for this year’s Marine Stakes and the Chad Brown trained Turf King looks set to head into the contest as the favorite. A winner of two of his first three races, he tasted defeat last time out in the Jersey Derby and will be hoping to regain the winning thread.

Selene Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and a sixteenth, dirt, open to three-year-old fillies. Total prize pool $150,000

An interesting field awaits in this year’s Selene Stakes where the Mark Casse trained Wonder Wheel will start as the clear favorite. After a brilliant two-year-old campaign which resulted in 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies success, things have been harder since she turned three.

Winless in her last three, she hasn’t been able to make a dent in both the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes and Kentucky Oaks. Looking to pick up a win ahead of some larger assignments later this year, she will be aiming to cement her class over this field.

Casse will also send Solo Album into the contest. This will be her first start at this level having won her Maiden last time out. It will be interesting to see how she is used in the race, and she could be a possible pace angle to set the race up her for her more illustrious stable mate.

Hoping to serve it up to Wonder Wheel will be the Saffie Joseph trained Honor D Lady. Nowhere near the class of Wonder Wheel, she did manage a third-place finish in the 2023 Mazarine Stakes and could potentially swoop if Wonder Wheel fails to fire.

Joseph looks to have a reasonably strong hand in the race and will also saddle Be My Sunshine and Blind Spot. Both runners look to have a decent chance, but Blind Spot could be the one to keep an eye on. A winner of the Star Shoot Stakes, she was demoted after interference but showed she was clearly capable of a big run. She could be one of the better value options of the contest.

Fortyfiveseventy, Friends for Life and Dolce Sopresa round out the field, but all look likely to start the race as large double figure prices.

Selene Stakes Odds & Betting Pick

On paper this looks like a contest made for Wonder Wheel. Regarded as one of the most exciting fillies in North America following her 2022 Breeders’ Cup success, 2023 hasn’t quite to plan but her connections will be hopeful of igniting her season here.

Marine Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and a sixteenth, dirt, open to three-year-olds. Total prize pool $150,000

Eight horses are due to line up for this year’s Marine Stakes and it looks to be an interesting betting heat.

The slim favorite for the race looks to be the Chad Brown trained Turf King. A winner of two of his first three career starts, his positive momentum was checked when he could only finish third in the Jersey Derby. Heading into that race with high hopes, that was a disappointing run, and he will be hoping to put that showing behind him in this contest.

Twin City for Stuart Simon is bound to be a popular selection. A winner of two of his last three career starts, his win in the 2023 King Corrie Stakes last time out would suggest that he is more than capable of winning a race like this.

One of the most interesting horses in this contest is bound to be Kaukokaipuu. Without a win in his first seven starts, he has been able to get his head in front in both of his last two starts. His win last time out in the Queenston Stakes was impressive and he looks primed to run another big race here.

Coming out from the widest starting gate will be Simcoe and he could be another one to watch with real interest. Slow to start his career with two lackluster performances, he has surged into life with two wins in succession. His win in Allowance Company last time out was good and he could be another one to back at a price.

Midnight Rising is without a win in his last three starts after winning his debut in impressive fashion. Having placed within Stakes company he is certainly not without a hope.

Patrick Husbands knows his way around Woodbine like no other and fans of backing long shots will take note of Velocitor. A winner of two of his last three starts including a brilliant win in the 2022 Coronation Futurity Stakes, he has just had the one run this year but could only finish seventh in the King Corrie Stakes which was won by Twin City.

Hoping that the cobwebs would have been blown away, he looks attractively priced given his ability.

One Bay Hemingway and Stayhonor Goodside will start the race as the two outsiders of the field. Both aren’t without hope, but they will need to produce something special to make the final picture.

Marine Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

Out of all five of the graded races that will take place this Saturday, this year’s Marine Stakes looks the toughest to call. Whilst many will be drawn to Turf King, Twin City could be the one to back following his victory in the King Corrie Stakes. That represents a good bit of form, and his connections will be hopeful of another victory.
