Shimbun Hai Stakes & NHK Mile Cup Recap

Satono Glanz swoops late and fast to win the Grade 2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai Stakes in a five-horse blanket finish and wins his third race on the trot and a first graded stakes victory while Champagne Color produces a shock in the Grade 1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo, and in the process registers his biggest career victory with a first graded stakes success on just his fifth career start.

NHK Mile Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $1,888,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 3-Year-Old Colts & Fillies

As the gates opened, it was the inside gate runner From Dusk who was keen to be on the pace and he took the field along at a strong pace closely followed by All Parfait and Session.

Back in the middle of the pack, we had the strongly fancied pair of Dolce More and Danon Touchdown, while the eventual winner Champagne Color was well back after bobbling and starting last of the eighteen-strong field.

The pace was strong with the quarter going in 23 seconds flat and the half-mile covered in a fast 46.3 seconds.

As they reached the end of the back-stretch and started into the far turn it was still From Dusk and All Parfait leading but as they hit the home stretch it was here that Danon Touchdown had come wide into the five-lane and he was traveling very strongly in hand for Yuga Kawada and looked the most likely winner as they reached the 300 meters (one and a half furlong) pole but he was quickly challenged by Champagne Color who had come from far back.

As they hit the sixteenth pole Champagne Color was all out to hold the late close from Umbrail with Obamburumai in third and Danon Touchdown fading to the fourth spot.

Shimbun Hai Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $780,000 – 2200 meters (1 mile 3 furlongs) miles) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

Twelve lined up for this valuable Grade 2 prize and from the gates, it was Libyan Glass who moved across from the widest gate to lead going into the clubhouse turn, and he was closely followed by Danon Tornado and Makoto Velikij, while one that was very slow and bobbled at the gate was the eventual fourth horse, Maxi.

As they came out of the clubhouse turn and headed down the backstretch it was still Libyan Glass leading but the jockey had slowed the pace allowing the field to concertina, and there was now just ten lengths front to back.

They ambled their way down the backstretch, and at this point, the eventual winner SATONO GLANZ was settled mid-pack and in hand under jockey Yuga Kawada.

It was here that the slow-starting Maxi rushed up wide and all of a sudden the pace of the race changed. Libyan Glass did not want to give up the inside rail and he and Maxi quickly widened three lengths clear.

As they hit the top of the stretch Libyan Glass widened by two lengths but could not hold out, and as they reached the final sixteenth, he was passed by Danon Tornado and finally right on the wire by the chalk Satono Glanz, with Maxi holding the fast closing Meiner Laulea for the fourth spot.
