The Grade 3 Soaring Softly Stakes headlines this Saturday’s Belmont card and looks set to be an entertaining renewal.
A race exclusively for three-year-old fillies, the action will unfold over seven furlongs and will take place on the famous Belmont Turf. Six horses will head to post with Chad Brown, Christophe Clement training two horses each.
Leading the pre-race betting is Love Appeals. Trained by Clement, she is a winner of two of her three career starts, and will be making her first graded appearance. She heads into the race in flying form, following her dominant victory last time out in Allowance company.
Soaring Softly Stakes
Grade 3, seven furlongs, turf, open to fillies aged three. Total prize pool: $175,000
Christophe Clement and Chad Brown have both enjoyed recent success in the Soaring Softly and both look to have a great chance of adding another graded prize to their list of legendary resumes.
It is Clement who trains the likely favorite for the contest – with Love Appeals looking to win the third race of her impressive fledging career.
This will be her first graded appearance, but she heads into the contest high in confidence following an emphatic performance last time out in Allowance Company.
Clement’s second string is Queen Picasso. Less experienced than her stablemate, she has had only one run in her career so far, but her debut was a winning one, when she gamely held off several rivals to win first time out.
Clearly highly thought of, she has been pitched straight into graded company and with further improvement on the cards, she could be the best value angle of the contest.
Chad Brown has long been regarded as one of the best turf trainers in America, and any runner he saddles will always have a fantastic chance of victory.
Brown’s best chance looks to sit with Lady Beth.
Similarly to Queen Picasso, Lady Beth will be having just her second start after winning her maiden in emphatic style. Trouncing her rivals that day, she could be special, and it will be interesting to see how she handles the step up to this level. Her debut win came on the Polytrack over at Gulfstream and this will be her first competitive run-on turf.
The second of Brown’s runners is Senior Prank. A winner of her debut, she has lost her last two and heads into this race looking to reverse the form with Love Appeals who beat her easily when last seen.
Rounding out the six-field runner field is American Apple who represents the Daniel Leitch barn and Quarrel who runs for Robert Ribaudo.
American Apple is set to be a danger to all. The only graded winner in this field, her win in the 2022 Matron Stakes is easily the best form on offer.
Since that victory she is now winless in her last two starts but she ran well when finishing second in the 2023 Mamzelle Stakes when last seen.
Quarrel has been off track since November but managed to notch the first win of her career when gamely hanging on in Maiden company. The nature of her win was tight and with fitness to prove she is likely to start as the outsider of the field.
Soaring Softly Stakes Odds & Betting Predictions
In what looks to be a fantastic race, you could make an appeal for several in the contest. Following her dominant win last time out, it’s easy to see why Love Appeals will start as the favorite. However, American Apple can boast the best form in the race and has been running at a higher level than all her rivals. Her second-place finish in the Mamzelle Stakes was unlucky, and if she brings in that level of performance here, she could be very tough to beat.
