G2, $200,000, 1m 1/16 dirt, 3yo fillies, 4.44pm PT

There are countless races called a Derby and it follows that there are just as many with the title of Oaks, and at Santa Anita today the spotlight falls on the Summertime Oaks, which features two major players coming on from the most prestigious version at Churchill Downs last month.

They were both longshots in the mile-eighth G1 Kentucky Oaks, but The Alys Look (5-2) outran her 30-1 odds with a fine performance to finish third, sitting in midpack until keeping on stoutly through the stretch to be beaten two and three-quarter lengths. And Tell Me Nolies (4-1) was the rank outsider of the field and ran like it, always well back and trailing in a never-at-the-races 12th.

That was an extension of previous good form for The Alys Look, who had run third in the mile-sixteenth G2 Fair Grounds Oaks and won a stakes at the same track. She’s the one to beat, although she has switched barns from Brad Cox to Chris Davis and that isn’t a positive.

And Tell Me Nolies couldn’t cope with the classy Faiza here this spring, chasing her home in the mile-sixteenth G2 Santa Anita Oaks on their second meeting, well adrift but a half-length ahead of the rallying Window Shopping (5-1) in third. And Tell Me Nolies has not retained her impressive two-year-old form and looks exposed, but Window Shopping is going the other way.

That SA Oaks was her stakes debut and she had previously smashed a mile maiden here to bits, romping by 16 and a half lengths. She has only made three starts and there’s improvement to come.

Typically, Bob Baffert has won this race a record four times and sends Doinitthehardway (3-1), who doesn’t seem one of his ‘A-team’ with a two-for-eight count and zero-for-two in stakes. She was a comfortable winner of a seven-furlong allowance here last month but the reason for her short odds is the trainer and not the horse.

John Sadler puts two in the gate and his best shot is with Anywho (3-1), who is unbeaten in two and ran out a convincing winner of a seven-furlong allowance here in March, with Lily Poo (8-1) a no-show fifth, beaten ten lengths. That was Anywho’s first run for Sadler and she has a huge scope for improvement, and Lily Poo’s subsequent stakes win on the all-weather at Golden Gate Fields gives that form a boost.

Sadler’s second-string Ancient Peace (8-1) ran riot when winning a mile allowance here by a dialed-down six lengths, but that was a short field after moving off the lawn and this is much tougher. Next time out she was fourth in the G3 Providencia here on turf and this doesn’t look the right spot for her.
