Sussex Stakes 2023: Paddington Powers Home

The second day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival hosted the Sussex Stakes 2023 the highlight event at Goodwood

Breeders Cup Odds

The horse that every spectator was clamoring to get a view of was Paddington, who was going for a seventh straight win and has a guaranteed spot in the G1 Breeders Cup Mile at San Anita this Nov 4th.

Paddington powers home to make it a magnificent seven.

Morning rain depleted the field, with five runners going to post, and eventual winner PADDINGTON was a very short price chalk at 4/9.

The big questions were how would the race tactics play out with the expected pace angle Chindit a late scratch. And would Paddington truly handle soft ground turf for the first time?

He had won the G1 2023 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown over a mile and two furlongs on his last start, so stamina should not have been an issue, and Ryan Moore thought so too, as he took Paddington to the pace as soon as the gates opened.

The speed was moderate, with the other four jockeys content to let Moore dictate. Something that played right into the hands of the Aidan O’Brien runner.

Paddington had already won the 2023 Grade 1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the 2023 Grade 1 St James’s Palace Stakes, both over a mile, so the chalk was not going to lack for speed.

As they entered the home stretch, the field moved to the outside rail and the fresher strip of turf. Moore urged Paddington for more as Inspiral came to join him traveling in hand, she looked a real threat but she soon backed out at the two furlong marker.

He widened entering the final two furlongs and went a length clear, with Inspiral now done with, but he still had to fend off one more strong challenge.

That final challenge came from French Raider Facteur Cheval, and he looked like causing a huge upset with a furlong to the wire. He got to within half a length of the chalk but try as hard as he could, could not make any further gains.

Paddington was all class, and as Moore gave his mount two cracks of the whip, he found plenty and lengthened once again at the sixteenth pole to win by one and a half lengths from Facteur Cheval in second and big longshot Charyn in the third spot. Aldaary was a never nearer fourth.

Could we now see a match-up with the highest-rated racehorse in the world, Equinox from Japan, who is rated 129?

Possibly at the 2023 Breeders Cup World Championships at Santa Anita in November?
