Sycamore Stakes Odds, Field & Racing Picks

A field of twelve will head down to post for this year’s Sycamore Stakes. British raider, Charlie Appleby, will be hoping to win the race for the very first time and sends out Bold Act who will be looking to win on American soil at the very first time of asking.

Sycamore Stakes

Grade 3, 1 and a half miles, turf, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool: $300,000

Charlie Appleby has made a name for himself in recent seasons as one of the world’s leading trainers and has bagged several high-profile American races. He is aiming to win another with Bold Act.

A consistent performer over in Europe, arguably his greatest achievement came when he finished third in the 2023 Hampton Court Stakes. That was a Group 3 contest, and that form should translate well here.

It’s rare that a nine-year-old will head into a graded contest with a real chance of winning but that’s exactly what we have with Red Knight.

One of three Michael Maker entered runners, he has clearly been getting better with age. This is perfectly surmised by his victory in the 2023 Grade 1 Man o’War Stakes. A winner of this race back in 2020, if he can produce anything close to that level of performance he will certainly be in with a major shout.

Maker’s other two runners are Therapist and Red Run. Of the two it could be worth keeping a close eye on Therapist. A consistent Handicap horse back in the UK, he will be making his first American start.

Despite his legendary status in the game, it’s surprising that Bill Mott has only won this race once. Mott sends out Channel Maker, who has finished behind Red Knight twice this year, but does head into the race after having won the 2023 Bowling Green Stakes. Likely to give his running once again, he has form to prove but could be one for the forecast.

Two of the most respected turf trainers, Chad Brown and Christophe Clement, will be hoping that their horses will be able to play a leading role in proceedings.

Highest Honors will be turning out for Brown in the hope that he will be able to win his first race in his last ten starts. A high-class performer on his day, he has recorded placed efforts in the 2023 Red Smith Stakes and finished third in this race last year.

Tawny Port will represent Clement, who hasn’t won this race since 2006. Although beaten by Channel Maker in the Bowling Green Stakes, he was victorious in the 2023 John’s Call Stakes. Set to be one of the pace angles of the race, he could be a superb value proposition.

Rounding out the field are Cellist, Kitodan, Another Mystery, Limited Liability and Foreign Relations.

2023 Sycamore Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

Red Knight is a previous winner of this race and even holds the race record. Although he is nine, he still looks full of running and could be the first horse to win this race twice since Holiday Star.
