The biggest race for fillies and mares takes place at Churchill Downs on Friday, as the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks takes place. There will be a prize purse of $1.25 million up for grabs for the big race, but could there potentially be a big shock in the Grade 1?

Kentucky Oaks Odds

The draw for the 2021 Kentucky Oaks took place on Monday morning, and Malathaat was made the favorite. Her price has remained stable, but there has already been money coming in for Search Results and Travel Column according to the latest Jazz Sports odds

Leading Contenders at the biggest race for fillies and mares

It promises to be an enthralling renewal of the Kentucky Oaks this year, with four leading contenders at the top of the betting. The draw hasn’t stopped the support coming for Travel Column, despite the fact that only three winners since 2011 have been drawn in place eight and below. Travel Column certainly ticks a lot of boxes and has beaten Clairiere twice in three starts. The most recent of those victories came in the Grade 2 Fair Ground Oaks, as the Brad Cox-trained horse won by a decent two and three-quarter lengths. She certainly has strong claims.

Clairiere is the one in the betting that we expect to shorten before the race on Friday, as gamblers will be looking for a potential winner at a higher price. Her win in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds was an excellent success against Travel Column, but the draw hasn’t helped her chances of victory in the Grade 1.

Search Results and Malathaat are the two standout horses in the field. Malathaat is a potential superstar and was phenomenal when winning the Ashland Stakes in early April. Search Results also has a strong form behind her, with her success in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes making her an easy one to support.

Malathaat has all the potential to be a superstar, and she hasn’t shown any evidence to this point that she isn’t ready to step up and win the Kentucky Oaks. We believe that she is a very easy favorite to bet, and the draw earlier in the week has only increased her chances of claiming the Grade 1 on Friday.

Since Malathaat is such a short price, we would also be looking for some place value elsewhere in the market. Competitive Speed may be a decent place pick for those that follow trends. Draw number 13 has produced three winners since 2014. However, a more solid place pick could be Will’s Secret, who has already beaten Pauline’s Pearl this season and was third behind Malathaat in the Ashland Stakes.
