The Satsuki Sho Recap

Sol Oriens produces a devastating stretch run to gun down his rivals late and reward backers of the second favorite in G1 the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas).

The Satsuki Sho

(Japanese 2000 Guineas) – Grade 1 – Purse $3,111,000 – 2000 meters (1 mile 2 furlongs) – Turf – 3-Year-Old Colts.

Late support saw Phantom Thief sent off as the chalk here and as the runners rushed away from the gate, it was Granite that got to the front early, ahead of the wide starting and well-fancied Bellagio Opera, and he was followed in third by Gruner Green as they went into the clubhouse turn.

Just in behind, but both straining the jockey’s arms were the well-fancied Ho O Biscuits and seasonal debutante Danon Touchdown, and they would pay for their early exertions later in the race.

The chalk Phantom Thief was about five from the back of this eighteen-strong field while the eventual winner SOL ORIENS was third last and about fifteen lengths from the speed going down the backstretch.

The first quarter went in 23.2 seconds and the half-mile was a blistering 46.7 seconds.

As they headed down the backstretch, it was still Granite leading the way but as they hit the end of the backstretch, it was here that Touch Wood made an effort to take the lead at the 400 meters (2-furlong) mark as they entered the short stretch but he soon backed out of it, while Sol Oriens was second last and still with ten lengths to find.

As they hit the furlong pole Tastiera, who had been stalking the leaders made his bid for glory and took over and widened by a couple of lengths but Sol Oriens who pitched eight wide into the lane was now closing rapidly, and his turn of speed was breathtaking as he whizzed by the eventual runner up around a sixteenth from the wire.

He widened and won by a length and a quarter with the slightly unlucky Phantom Thief in third who met traffic problems a couple of times in the stretch and may have been second at best.

He was hemmed in first by Sol Oriens on his outside and then switched inside where he met more trouble. The rider had to take a pull, and although he closed to the wire, he would not have beaten the impressive winner.

The 100/1 longshot Metal Speed ran a great race in fourth and he’ll be interested if taking a class drop next time.
