Twilight Derby & Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes Odds

Whilst most of the focus on Saturday’s Santa Anita card will rightly be on the Breeders’ Cup, there are two Graded Stakes races that will take place before the Championship Races, the Twilight Derby and Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes.

Breeders Cup Odds

A loaded field of thirteen will line for up this year’s renewal of the Twilight Derby, and there looks to be plenty of horses in with a serious chance. Likely to start as the favorite is Webslinger. A runner up in the 2023 Grade 1 Saratoga Derby when last seen, he has had a fruitful campaign, winning both the 2023 American Turf and 2023 Audubon Stakes. Winless in his last two, this looks like the ideal opportunity to get another win on the board.

A small field of six will head down to post for the TAA Stakes, where British trainer Charlie Appleby will be hoping to get his day off to the perfect start with Siskany. A good winner of the 2023 Belmont Cup Stakes when making his American debut, Appleby will be hopeful of scoring yet another prestigious American prize.

Twilight Derby

Grade 2, 1 mile and an eighth, turf, open to three-year-old horses. Total prize pool: $250,000

In a competitive renewal of the Twilight Derby, Webslinger will hope to end his current winless run and cement his class. In what has been a hugely productive year, the Mark Casse trained star has won both the 2023 American Turf and 2023 Audubon Stakes. Clearly buoyed by those performances, he has been tried at the highest level, finishing fourth in the 2023 Belmont Derby and second in the 2023 Saratoga Derby. Although not victorious in either race, that form stacks up well in this field and he could be the undoubted class angle of the race.

Hoping to inflict a third consecutive defeat on Webslinger will be British raider Silver Knott. Trained out of the Charlie Appleby stable, Appleby and jockey William Buick are no strangers to American success and will hope that this former Group 3 winner can win his first American contest.

Seal Team is another who is bound to be popular in the betting. Lightly raced in comparison to most in the field, this will be just his fifth career start. Whilst he has form to find on the principles, his win last time out in Allowance company was done in impressive fashion and he is more than worthy of his place in this lineup.

The American racing scene is abuzz with the news that legendary jockey Frankie Dettori will ply his trade stateside next year. The Italian will ride Panic Alarm and will hope that his mount will be able to reproduce his Irish form and net his first American prize.

Panic Alarm has form that ties in with another Irish bred horse, Maltese Falcon. A good winner of the 2023 La Jolla Handicap, he then ran poorly when finishing well behind the reopposing Seal Team last out. He arrives with something to prove.

Other outside contenders look set to be Reincarnate and Almendares.

Reincarnate has been a former Graded Stakes winner as a two-year-old and could have the class to play a major part in this contest.

This will be Almendares first crack in an American Stakes race, but he has won some competitive races back in Ireland and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Completing the line up are Reiquist, Be Your Best, Packs a Whalop, Mondego, California Bay and Watsonville.

2023 Twilight Derby Odds & Betting Prediction

In what looks like a highly competitive renewal of the Twilight Derby, the class angle of the field looks to be Webslinger. Arguably worthy of a spot in the Breeders’ Cup, he should make his class felt in this slightly easier grade and looks the one to side with.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile and five eighths, dirt, open to three-year-old horses and older. Total prize pool: $250,000

A field of six will head down to post for this year’s TAA Stakes. Although lacking in numbers, there is certainly no shortage in class.

Siskany will be making just his second American start and will be looking for his second U.S win.

A good winner of the 2023 Belmont Cup, he will start as the one they will all need to beat.

Hoping to serve it up to the favorite will be Salesman. Moved to the States this year, he is still looking for his first American victory, but was a multiple winner back in France. Whilst he has form to find with Siskany, he is a gritty performer and can’t be discounted.

Time for Trouble is another veteran in the lineup and will be looking for his second win of 2023. By no means a prolific winner at this level, he did warm up nicely for this contest with a second-place finish in the 2023 Birdstone Stakes. At a price, he could be worth a second look.

The same could be said for Kiss Today Goodbye. Although on a massive winless run of twelve races, he has proved in the past he can compete and win at this level when winning the 2020 San Antonio Stakes. Whilst a leap of faith may be required, he has shown he is capable of winning big races on his day and shouldn’t be easily dismissed.

Serifos is another who isn’t a prolific winner. Having won just two of his last eight starts, both his recent victories have come on sloppy and soft dirt tracks. With the Californian weather set to remain fair, he might be best watched here.

Rounding out the TAA Stakes field is Win The Day. Yet to land a blow in this grade, he is another who looks to have plenty to find with those at the top of the market.

2023 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes Odds & Racing Picks

Whilst no horses can be discounted in a six-runner field, this race looks like the perfect spot for Siskany. No horse in the line up has the form of his Belmont Cup victory and there doesn’t look to be too many apparent dangers. He could take some stopping.
