Therapist takes control

It was age before beauty in the United Nations, when the eight-year-old Therapist gained his first success at the highest level with an upset defeat of hot favorite Catnip, with the winner’s year-older barn mate Red Knight third.

Therapist was kept away from a steady pace by Javier Castellano, but the 12-1 chance came running off the turn and caught Catnip at the eighth pole before easing away to win by a length and a half, while Red Knight left his stretch rally too late and could only catch the show spot, three-quarters of a length further back.

The old-timer will continue at the top level, with trainer Mike Maker considering the G1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga on August 26 as a potential target.

Hottie looking good

There was another upset in the Molly Pitcher when Shotgun Hottie produced a career-best to break through at Graded level, seeing off Le Da Vida and odds-on favorite Search Results.

The second-choice Loved tried to go gate-to-wire, but 8-1 fourth-choice Shotgun Hottie – ridden by Paco Lopez and trained by Cherie DeVaux – took her measure at the eighth pole, put away the persistent threat of Search Results, and had enough in the tank to turn back the late thrust of De La Vida by a half-length, with Search Results three-quarters of a length further back.

Class tells for Proxy

There were a few shocks through the afternoon but the heaviest chalk got the job done, Proxy cruising to victory in the Monmouth Cup from Whelen Springs and Calibrate.

It looked a simple task for the 2-5 shot but it still took a little graft, Proxy bidding to go gate-to-wire under Joel Rosario but pressured at the top of the lane by both Whelen Springs and Calibrate. For a moment it looked like another upset was on the cards, but Proxy buckled down and cleared away at his leisure, rolling on to score by a comfortable two-and-a-half lengths. Whelen Springs had four and three-quarters to spare over the fading Calibrate.

The victory pushed Proxy’s bankroll past $2 million, and trainer Michael Stidham will move him back up in grade for his next start.

Spending cashes in again

Consumer Spending certainly has the measure of Surprisingly, taking the score in their personal competition to 3-0 with a game success in the Matchmaker, the winning margin of a half-length following similarly close calls between them of a neck and three-quarters of a length.

The even-money favorite, ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Chad Brown, had her old rival in her sights all the way, and although Surprisingly kicked clear off the turn and opened up daylight, Consumer Spending was on her in a flash and the pair dueled clear. It was the third time unlucky for Surprisingly, though, as Consumer Spending went home too strong, with Gam’s Mission best of the rest in third, two and three-quarter lengths away.
