Vagrancy Stakes Odds & Betting Predictions

The highlight at Belmont Park on Sunday is the G3 Vagrancy Stakes, which features the return of G3 winner Dr B against strong rivals including G1-placed Caramel Swirl, on a bid for redemption, and the prolific stakes-winners Funny How and Rossa Veloce in a contest sure to be characterised by plenty of pace.

Speed is of the essence at Belmont Park on Sunday, with the feature Vagrancy drawing a tight-knit field of distaffers who bring plenty of good recent form to the table.

There’ll be a deal of interest in the return of Dr B (5-2), who built up a strong body of work in the second half of 2022 before capping it with a stakes breakthrough in the G3 Go For Wand over a mile at Aqueduct in December. She ran her rivals out of town on a sloppy track, breaking on top and improving her position all the way around, drawing off to win by four and a quarter lengths.

She was stretching out there, but had previously shown plenty of speed in sprint stakes and this distance should suit for her comeback. She’ll likely be somewhere near the pace.

Her main market rival is Caramel Swirl (2-1), who was a major disappointment at odds of 2-5 when fourth in a six-furlong stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on her return from a five-month layoff. But that wasn’t her, as her effort when runner-up to champion Goodnight Olive in the G1 Ballerina at Saratoga over seven furlongs last summer suggests. This intermediate distance should be fine and her comeback will have set her up for a better performance today.

Funny How (6-1) has never been off the board in her life, and had racked up five straight wins – including an easy stakes score – at Aqueduct before running her best race in defeat in the seven-furlong G3 Distaff at the same track.

She finished off her race well to take the ‘place’ slot and was well clear of the others, who included the favourite Rossa Veloce (9-2), five and a half lengths back in fourth, and Easy To Bless (50-1), last of seven and no show whatsoever.

Rossa Veloce had gone into the race on her own little high, four-for-five at the Big A including a wham-bam all-the-way wide-margin stakes success over six furlongs. She was nixed by a bad break and bumping in that Distaff and should be given another chance, especially as she could get her own way on the lead.

This could be a tough comeback spot for Beguine (5-1), who is zero-for-five since winning her maiden, although her performance when runner-up to Rossa Veloce in an allowance over this distance at Aqueduct, beaten a half-length, means she shouldn’t be ignored.

The cutback may not suit Midnight Stroll (12-1), winner of the G3 Delaware Oaks over a mile-sixteenth and never going this short since her debut, while Mosienko (15-1) usually works the allowance beat and looks out of her depth.

A bad trip beat ROSSA VELOCE last time, when she could never get the lead, but she was a progressive four-for-five before that and looks capable of bouncing back.
