Vigil Stakes

G3, $150,000, 6f all-weather, 3yo+, 4.32pm ET

Robert Tiller won the Vigil four years running (2017-20) with the incredible Pink Lloyd, and could have a similar contender for glory in the youngest horse in the field, the fast-improving Patches O’Houlihan (7-5).

The three-year-old has not put a foot wrong this year, going five-for-five as he has climbed the ladder from claimers to stakes and finally his breakthrough at Graded level, in the 2023 G3 Bold Venture here over six and a half furlongs on the synthetic strip, beating many of the horses who take him on again today.

He broke fast and dominated, using the same blitzing tactics that have served him so well, and quickened away again when the pack closed on him in mid-stretch. At the wire, he had a length and a quarter to spare over longshot Last American Exit (15-1), who kept on well without producing a change of gear, with Old Chestnut (8-1) a half-length further back in third, fading a little after putting in the hard yards chasing the winner – and who is now one-for-17 in stakes with that win back in 2019.

Secret Reserve (15-1), zero-for-five in 2023, was another half-length away fourth, and it was the same margin back to stakes debutant Souper Watson (12-1) in fifth, this 2-3-4-5 all older, seasoned horses without the scope for further improvement that characterizes Patches O’Houlihan.

It would be a shock if any of them could turn the tables on the youngster, whose trailblazing style will always put lesser runners out of their comfort zone.

Allowance winner Outlaw Kid (5-2) made his stakes breakthrough here on the lawn over five furlongs last time, doing his best work late to get the money by a neck, with Rockcrest (9-2) – runner-up in the Vigil 12 months ago – fading away in the closing stages to be fifth, beaten three lengths.

Outlaw Kid is on the up-and-up and if he maintains that progression could pose a threat to the favorite, while Rockcrest will be happier back at the distance over which he went gate-to-wire to win a stakes on his previous start, with Last American Exit a comfortably beaten third. He could vie with Patches O’Houlihan on the front end.

Stakes debutant My Buddy B (20-1) has been winning allowances on dirt at Mountaineer Park and both the surface switch and big class hike make him hard to like.

2023 Vigil Stakes Odds & Prediction

He has been a breath of fresh air on the local sprint scene this year and the highly progressive front-runner PATCHES O’HOULIHAN is impossible to oppose.
