WITH ANTICIPATION S AND VIRGINIA DERBY RECAP

On August 31st Colonial Downs hosted the G3 Virginia Derby and yesterday Saratoga hosted the G3 With Anticipation Stakes, Horse Racing Tote brings you the Recap in case you missed it!

New Kent County Virginia Derby Recap

In the end, the G3 Virginia Derby didn’t see a surprising result; still, Wootton Asset (23-5) was the third chance in the field of 10 three-year-old participants. The bay colt trained by Graham Motion managed only third place behind Indian Lake (53-10) and Experienced (12-5) last time out, but on turf; he enjoyed the one mile and a furlong long trip, taking the most of the purse $250,000 home in 1:46.79. Jose Ortiz let the colt settle in the midfield while Indian Lake was again leading the pack; however, with the final stage approaching, the Bald Eagles Derby winner weakened and was disappointing when finishing sixth.

At the same time the leader was becoming tired, Wootton Asset was already quickening nicely on the outside, and even though he turned wide to the final stretch, he gave another spurt of speed and smoothly aimed for the front. Underestimated Slicked Back (13-1) also showed a nice finish; though he couldn’t threaten the winner much and finished second by ¾ of length. It Can Be Done (7-1) tracked the leader throughout the race and stayed on to grab third with Hidden Enemy (46-5) crossing the wire in fourth and favourite Experienced, who never looked like travelling, in fifth.

Wootton Asset previously raced in France, where he won only among the lesser competition, meaning his success in Virginia Derby has been his most significant win so far.

With Anticipation S Recap

On Wednesday, a field of six two-year-olds clashed over a mile and half a furlong in this G3 race on turf, with the duo of favourites caught off guard by Coinage (7-1). The most prestigious race of the card was run for the purse of $150,000.

Because the With Anticipation Stakes produced Catholic Boy or Fire At Will in the past, this year’s edition participants were closely watched; especially Portfolio Company (2-1) and Limited Liability (9-10). Both of the colts were victorious in their only outings, but the experience proved to be the key in this race as Coinage was the quickest out of the gate and aimed for the front immediately.

The Mark Casse bound chestnut had three starts under his belts, including a win in a maiden and third place on the black-type scene, and he progressed once more for the With Anticipation Stakes as his performance was just professional. He led the pack from the gate to the wire, and even though Portfolio Company was closing on him in the final stretch, Coinage wasn’t troubled by the attack; tried a bit harder, and in the end; he won comfortably by 2 lengths. The son of Tapit was followed home by Portfolio Company in second, with Limited Liability failing to impress when finishing third.

The winning colt lead by Junior Alvarado went past the post in 1:43.69.
