The Yasuda Kinen

G1 – Purse $2,499,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

What a race in store with last year’s first, second, and fourth all doing battle once more.

We have to start with Songline who was a winner last time in the Grade 1 Victoria Mile where he edged out the brave Sodashi right on the wire. The interesting thing is that connections are taking the same prep route as they did in 2022. Songline ran in the Victoria Mile (5th) before taking the 2022 Yasuda Kinen, so the horse has clearly been laid out for a repeat bid.

However, it’s important to note that his run style is one of a mid-pack stalker and he closes very late. In last year’s Yasuda Kinen, he beat the fast-finishing Schnell Meister by a narrow margin just as he did with Sodashi in the Victoria Cup. He’ll certainly need to avoid traffic problems.

Sodashi, the “White Angel” of Japanese racing and one of the most popular horses in training has hit the board on her last three tries in graded stakes company. Before the Victoria Mile she was third behind another of today’s foes Serifos in the Grade 1 Mile Championship back in November and prior to that was second in the Grade 2 Fushun Himba Stakes here at Tokyo. She will likely be close to the speed here but just need to find a bit of improvement to hit the winner’s circle.

Last year’s fourth Serifos has been lightly raced since then. He won his next two starts in the Grade 2 Fuji Stakes here in Tokyo before winning the Grade 1 Mile Championship. He warmed up for this with a good fifth in the Dubai Turf at Meydan in March and should be spot-on fitness-wise. Check out the 2023 Fuji Stakes Odds, Field & Racing Picks.

We touched on last year’s second Schnell Meister and like Songline he needs the gaps to appear. His run style is one of a deep closer but he is sure to get a nice race set up with plenty of speed here. He won the Grade 2 Yomiuri Milers Cup last time and has solid graded stakes back form here at Tokyo Racecourse.

For those looking outside the big guns, then Jack D’Or and Champagne Color look like two that have a solid chance.

Jack D’Or has won eight of his fourteen races, and last time took his form to a new level by winning the Grade 1 Osaka Hai in April. He went gate to wire there and that is the sort of run style we can expect again. He did not go quick there but injected pace as they hit the short stretch. Tokyo has a longer stretch run so interesting if he tries to adopt similar tactics. This race will surely be run at a much fast tempo.

Champagne Color fits in the “still could be anything” bracket. He has only had five career starts but won the NHK Mile Cup, a Grade 1 last time. Prior to that, he finished sixth in the Grade 3 Keisei Hei behind Sol Oriens (2000 Guineas Winner and Derby runner-up) so that is top-class form. He is improving very quickly and is a major player here.

2023 Yasuda Kinen Odds and Prediction

Songline has clearly been laid out for a repeat and will be trying to win this for the second year in succession and can close late to hit the board.

However, our main choice is the rapidly improving CHAMPAGNE COLOR who has an ideal race set up to stalk the pace and strike at the furlong pole and he’ll then try to fend off the pack.

Schnell Meister will be the latest closer here and he should be included in exotics, and another that should be battling for a slice underneath is Sodashi.
