Yorkshire Cup Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $220,000 – 1 mile 5 furlongs and 188 yards – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

The chalk here is the Hughie Morrison barn inmate Quickthorn 9/4 who developed into one of the top stayers in the UK last season and showed he was in good form when finishing 6th of 15 in the Dubai Gold Cup.

He was behind both Broome 11/4 and Siskany 4/1 in that race, but both of those rivals were already race fit, so it should be much tighter today. Quickthorn will aim to dominate his rivals with a gate-to-wire performance just like he did in last year’s Lonsdale Cup here at York when he slaughtered the field by 14 lengths.

Broome has been a great servant to Aidan O’Brien and now aged 7 he can still mix it at graded stakes level. He was a solid 8th of 20 in the Grade 1 Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe in October and had run well at Saratoga when 4th of 10 in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes.

His mid-pack run style means he can find himself in a pocket as he did in the Arc De Triomphe but in this small field, Ryan Mooore should be able to get some cover and he’ll be ridden for a turn of foot in the stretch.

The Godolphin runner Siskany had a very productive winter in Dubai, as apart from finishing second in the Dubai Gold Cup behind Broome, he had previously won the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy over this distance at Meydan and his form was progressive last year, as he also took the Listed Dubai Godolphin Stakes at Newmarket.

He is another that likes to stalk the pace so should have an ideal race set up with the chalk likely to make this a strong pace on the front end.

One horse who is now taking a step down the class ladder is Eldar Eldarov 7/2. He won the Grade 2 Queens Vase at Royal Ascot last June before going on to classic glory by winning the Grade 1 St Leger in September. He is one that will likely aim to close in late.

He was behind Quickthorn at the Ascot Champions meeting in October, but that came at the end of a tough three-year-old campaign and he should be a much stronger horse this year.

We have three other runners in this select field and they are Giavellotto 14/1, Tashkhan 16/1 and the big outsider Get Shirty who is 40/1 on the morning line odds

Of those three then the talented Tashkan would have a chance of a slice underneath if this turned into a real staying test. He was well behind Quickthorn in last year’s Lonsdale Cup, so this cutback in distance today, compared to his last three runs, means that is a downside to his chances.

Giavellotto was a big improver last season when gradually stepping up the class ladder and moving from a rating of 88 up to a high of 112. However, he was well beaten by a few of these in the Dubai Gold Cup and was behind Eldar Eldarov in the St Leger.

The final runner and longshot of the field Get Shirty looks to be clearly outclassed here today and will do well to do any better than a slice underneath.

Quickthorn has some very solid form here at York, not least the demolition job in last year’s Lonsdale Cup and he will make a bold bid to go gate-to-wire here.

But the horse with the most scope in this field has to be ELDAR ELDAROV and he gets a narrow vote in what looks like a fantastic duel between the top four on the board. He’ll be a much stronger horse and could lay down a serious challenge to Kyprios from the Aidan O’Brien barn in this season’s major staying races.
