2023 The Senorita Stakes & The Lazaro Barerra Stakes

2023 The Senorita Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $100,000 – 6 ½ Furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

Teena Ella uses her 2lb weight pull to take revenge on Fast And Shiny and hold off the late closing longshot Tom’s Regret to register her first career graded stakes win.

Tom’s Regret broke smartly from the gates but she was soon passed by Procrastination and then Fast and Shiny, and as they moved through the downhill part of this six-and-a-half furlongs, The chalk, and eventual winner TEENA ELLA moved up for a share of third spot with The Wild Grazer on her inside.

The pace wasn’t too quick but Chismosa was still outpaced at the back of the pack some seven lengths from the speed.

As they hit the turn to the stretch, it was still Procrastination and Fast And Shiny having a duel up front but Teena Ella peeled into the three lane at the top of the stretch, and she was traveling smoothly under Maldonado and he sent her to the front at the furlong pole.

She looked to have the race easily won but had to repel a late surge from the longshot Tom’s Regret who closed late and fast and just failed under the wire by just a neck.

The Wild Grazer had traffic problems coming into the home stretch and was run out of seconds close to the wire, while we have to mention the last horse Chismosa who was coming back from a layoff but closed very late to be beaten just over two lengths at the wire (one to watch next time)

The Lazaro Barerra Stakes

Stakes – Purse $100,000 – 7 Furlongs – Dirt– 3-Year-Olds

One In Vermillion shows a touch of class to win on a significant class drop and prove his Santa Anita Derby run was no fluke.

Just the four runners went to post for this $100k purse and out of the gates the chalk Hard To Figure broke smartly to lead early from the eventual winner ONE IN VERMILLION.

He bobbled at the gate but soon recovered, and found a seam inside the chalk to take the lead and set the pace, while the other two runners Tahoe Sunrise and Navy Man were content to let the first two battle away up front.

As they went down the backstretch, it was One In Vermillion pouring it on up front but he was soon challenged by the chalk at the end of the backstretch and they went neck and neck into the far turn.

As they hit the top of the stretch Hard To Figure started to back out of things and Tahoe Sunrise came wide into the three lane and loomed a danger but Hector Berrios had saved something on the eventual winner, and he quickly widened two lengths clear at the furlong pole and poured it on right to the wire to win by five and a quarter lengths.

Navy Man who was six lengths adrift at the top of the stretch closed late to take second right on the wire from Tahoe Sunrise and Hard To Figure.
