2022 Breeders Cup Highlights

The 39th running of the Breeders Cup took place at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky this past weekend.  

On Future Stars Friday, there were five races starting with the BC Turf Sprint won by Mischief Magic. Wonder Wheel was the winner of the BC Juvenile Fillies, and Meditate took the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf.  

On the boy’s side, Forte won the BC Juvenile and is now the Kentucky Derby favorite. Victoria Road closed out the day by winning the BC Juvenile Turf.  

Arabian Knight dominates the track for Bob Baffert

Saturday Card started out with a maiden race for two year olds and while Friday may have been future stars day, 2.3 million dollars purchase Arabian Knight was a 7-length maiden winner for trainer Bob Baffert and went to 40/1 in the 2023 Kentucky Derby Future book pool at JazzSports.

 Goodnight Olive claims the victory in the Filly & Mare Sprint

The BC Filly & Mare Sprint opened the races and Goodnight Olive went off favored and took home the trophy. In the BC Turf Sprint Caravel went off at 42/1 and held off the best European Sprinters to claim the victory.

Malathaat wins the Distaff by a nose and officially retires

The BC Mile featured a calvary charge to the finish and 2021 Juvenile Turf winner Modern Games won his 2nd BC title for the team of Charles Appleby and William Buick.  

In the BC Distaff, Todd Pletcher sent out Nest and Malathaat and it was the latter winning a three-horse photo finish under John Velasquez. Both Malathaat and 2nd place finisher Blue Stripe was retired after the race.

Flightline retires after a dazzling victory at the Breeders Cup Classic

The BC Turf was won by Rebels Romance in dominating fashion under James Doyle and Charles Appleby scores his 3rd BC win of the year.  

This set the stage for the BC Classic where Flightline went off at 2/5 under Flavien Prat for John Sadler. 

The 4-year-old pressed Life is Good through the first three-quarters of a mile and then blew past his rival to win the race by 8 lengths and cement his title as a horse of the year.  

He was retired on Monday and two and a half percent share was sold for 4.6 million dollars making Flightline’s value roughly 184 million dollars.  He will stand stud at Lanes End.
