2023 Falmouth Stakes Highlights

This week’s recap starts at Newmarket in England, where the 4-year-old filly Nashwa was a five-length victor in the G1 Falmouth Sakes going one mile.  Nashwa had been the beaten favorite in each of her last four races including the Breeders Cup.  Dropped back to the distance of one mile, the filly powered through the rain for an easy win under Hollie Doyle for Team Gosden.

Shaquille takes the G1 July Cup

Also at Newmarket was the 6 furlongs G1 July Cup and despite rearing up at the start 3-year-old Shaquille won his second straight G1 under Rossa Ryan for trainer Julie Camacho

Chad Brown grabs Diana Stakes Victory

There are not many G1 Turf races that are run without a Chad Brown horse but the G1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga may have been the first time he had four of the five entered in the race.  In Italian was sent off as the 1/5 favorite but was caught at the wire by her stablemate Whitebeam under Flavien Prat.  Mark Casse trainee Fev Rover finished third.

Yo Yo Candy upsets Sanford at 46-1

As if one big favorite losing was not enough for the track known as “The Graveyard of Favorites” , in the G3 Stanford 46/1 longshot Yo Yo Candy defeated the 1/5 favorite Gold Sweep. Trained by Daniel Velasquez and ridden by Angel Castillo, the California bred took the lead at the top of the stretch and never looked back.

Casa Creed holds back Annapolis for Kelso triumph

In the other stakes race from The Spa, multiple G1 winner Casa Creed got the jump on Annapolis and took the Kelso going one mile on the turf.  The 7-year-old was winning his 8th race from 32 starts for trainer Bill Mott.  Ridden by Luis Saez, Casa Creed won his third graded stakes on the Saratoga turf.

Coming up this weekend is the G1 Haskell

The racing world will head to New Jersey this coming weekend for the G1 Haskell.  Tapit Trice will face off against the highly regarded 2 for 2 Arabian knight. Also on Saturday, The G1 United Nations will take place and Red Knight from the Mike Maker barn figures to be a slight favorite over the Richard Mandela-trained Planetario.

Golden Gate Fields racetrack to close later this year

On a sad note, the Stron-eck group announced that once the 2023 meet has concluded, Golden Gate Fields will be closed effectively ending horse racing in Northern California.  In 2008, Bay Meadows was closed and racing was run in Albany 9 months a year.
