2023 Irish Derby and More Graded Stakes Highlights

2023 Irish Derby Highlights

This week’s recap starts in Ireland where Auguste Rodin claimed a historic double.  Having already captured the Epsom Derby, the three-year-old took the 2023 Irish Derby under Ryan Moore and became the first horse since 2016 to win both races.  Ryan Moore was in the saddle for his first Irish Derby victory and it was the 100th classic win for trainer Aiden O’Brien.

Stephen Foster Stakes Highlights

Ellis Park has always been the little brother when it came to big races in Kentucky but on July 1st, after one hundred and one years they hosted a G1.  And not only was it a G1 but the purse was one million dollars and included a guaranteed spot in the Breeders Cup Classic

Flavien Prat kept West Will Power just off the pace then moved to the middle of the track and then broke away for the victory. Rattle N Roll charged late to get second place.

Also on the July 1st card at Ellis were a pair of G2s.  Steve Asmussen saddled Pauline’s Pearl to victory in the Fleur De Lis under Joel Rosario.  That was followed by the Wise Dan which was taken by Stiched at 46/1 for trainer Geg Foley and jockey Flavien Prat.

Pat Day Mile Highlights

Fort Bragg was always highly regarded but health issues and some bad luck kept the colt from reaching his potential.  Making his first start since a second-place finish in the G2 Pat Day Mile, and was sent off as the 3/5 favorite in the G3 Dwyer at Belmont Park.  Sitting second, John Velasquez brought Fort Bragg alongside of Saudi Crown and they went head and head for the last quarter mile with the Baffert trainee winning by a nose       

John A. Nerud Stakes Highlights

The co-feature at Belmont was the 7 furlong G2 John Nerud, making his 31st career start Three Technique drew off to win by nearly four lengths under Javier Castellano for trainer Jason Cook.  Weyburn making his first start in the Todd Pletcher barn went off favored and finished last.   

Latest Horse Racing News

Hall of fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will move back to California from Monmouth Park and will transfer 29 of his horses to long-time assistant Dan Ward.  Hollendorfer has won more than 7700 races and is third in total training wins.  He will maintain a stable of 12 to 15 horses in California
