Equinox wins the 2023 Takarazuka Kinen

Let’s start in Japan where Equinox came into the G1 Takarazuka Kinen as the world’s top-rated horse after his victory in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic.  Equinox was well back early but responded to jockey Christophe Lemaire and swung wide and out-finished 55/1 longshot Dream Journey.  The victory was worth a Win and You’re In spot for the Breeders Cup Turf

2023 Royal Ascot Meeting Highlights

Many of the top horses in Europe made their way to Royal Ascot and there were a number of surprises starting the opening day when Triple Time at 33/1 took the G1 Queen Anne Stakes defeating two-time Breeders Cup winner Modern Games and highly regarded Inspiral. The winner received a spot in the Breeders Cup Mile.

Bradsell takes the G1 King’s Stand Stakes

Later in the day in the G1 King’s Stand Stakes with a spot in the Breeder Cup Turf Sprint on the line. Bradsell at 14/1 defeated favorite Highland Princess.

Mostahdaf crushes the field for trainers John and Thady Gosden

Day 2 also featured upsets as 10/1 Mostahdaf took the G1 Prince of Wales for trainers John and Thady Gosden and secured a birth in the Breeders Cup Turf.  Favored Luxembourg was a well-beaten second.

Valiant Force dominates in the G2 Norfolk

Completed the list of unlikely winners taking Win and You’re In races was Valiant Force who went off at 150/1 and took the G2 Norfolk and earned a place in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf.

Frankie Dettori triumphs at Royal Ascot

Italian jockey Frankie Dettori was making his final appearance at Ascot and left with three winners which gave him a total of 80 Ascot victories.

Day 1 did not go as planned when the 52-year-old was handed a 9-day suspension for careless riding.  That soon became a bad memory as he came home on top in the G1 Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami.  He followed that up with a victory on Gregory to take the G2 Queens Vase. He captured his 80th when he guided Porta Fortuna to victory in the G3 Albany.

Two Phil’s scores a dominating victory in the 2023 Ohio Derby

Back in the US, Two Phil’s showed that his second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby was no fluke as he rolled to a nearly six-length win in the Ohio Derby defeating Bishops Bay.  Geraldo Corrales replaced the injured Jareth Loveberry as jockey for trainer Larry Rivelli.  Unfortunately, the next day it was announced that Two Phil’s will need to undergo ankle surgery and will likely miss the remainder of the year and possibly will be retired.
