HRT HIGHLIGHTS #19: Kentucky Derby Recap and Preakness Odds

In HRT we bring the latest information about horse racing. Here are our HRT HIGHLIGHTS #19 which summarizes the most important events that happened during the weekend.

Kentucky Derby Recap

It was unbelievable! Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby in the kind of underdog deed that Hollywood loves. The 80-1 colt came home in front to secure himself and his little-known trainer and jockey a slice of racing immortality.

What is truly amazing was that back in September this horse was claimed for $30,000.  That is quite the investment !!!!!

The victory was set up by lightning-fast three-quarters of a mile pace which caused all the speed horses to fade and left favorite Epicenter in the lead with Zandon chasing.

With a furlong to go, it looked like it was Epicenter’s race until Rich Strike and jockey Sonny Leon avoided a tiring Messier and then blew by the top two and claimed the Roses.

Secret Oath charges to a Kentucky Oaks win

The Kentucky Oaks was billed as a blockbuster before the gates opened, when Secret Oath prevailed in dominant fashion, crowning herself the new queen of her generation and securing a personal triumph for her trainer Wayne Lukas.

Nest, the 2/1 favorite tried to keep pace but ended up 2 lengths behind.  Desert Dawn at 50/1 filled out the trifecta.

Preakness Stakes Preview

The May 21st Preakness is the next race on the triple crown trail and we have 18 horses currently looking at a trip to Baltimore.

Rich Strike is a definite and Epicenter is likely depending on how he looks this week.  Secret Oath looks to give Lucas his 7th Preakness win while Zandon is still looking at options.

Let’s take a look at the future book odds brought to you by our sponsor JazzSports.  Epicenter is currently the 2/1 favorite with Zandon at 4/1.  Early Voting who skipped the Derby is 5/1 along with Secret Oath.

Creative Minister who won an allowance race on Derby day is at 6/1. Taiba, Messier, and Mo Donegal are heading home to regroup.  Skippy Longstocking is 20/1 and Un Ojo who missed the Derby due to a foot injury is 33/1 to get the win.
